-TSS- Posted February 15, 2014 Report Posted February 15, 2014 An old article but the content has not become obsolete: http://edition.cnn.com/2012/11/14/opinion/china-challenges-one-child-brooks/ China has a surplus of 30 million young men and one can only imagine the consequences when those men reach a point of realizing that they can't find themselves spouses. The rich and educated men can get wives or at least import women but for millions of Chinese men there is loneliness ahead of them. One can only be thaqnkful that they're not muslims. Quote
TimG Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) One can only be thaqnkful that they're not muslims.Actually it has a potential to be a lot worse since China has the technological and industrial base required to build a military that can threaten its neighbors. The Red Army is filled with nationalistic bigots who are convinced that China will be the only superpower in the future and all other nations should cowtow to it. Add 30 million soldiers that have nothing to lose to this arrogance and you have the ingredients for WW3. Edited February 16, 2014 by TimG Quote

Like India which has the same problem right next door to China. The real trick will be keeping our noses out of it. Good luck with that eh? AngusThermopyle Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 Quite a few years ago I remember an article that addressed this very topic. If I remember correctly it put forth the theory that this situation could indeed be the cause of a major war. Of course this situation wasn't helped by the cultural practise of disposing of baby girls due to the one child law and families wanting baby boys as opposed to girls. Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye
Rue Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) Very interesting posts from all of you. Yes its a serious demographic issue. China is in a difficult place. You just can't when you get over 2 billion people and no one can be too sure just how large the population is, to try keep a one child family and not expect everyone to want boys is impossible. Now you look in India we can see the gang rapes happening at a noticeable increasing rate which shows even a relatively passive society when faced with extreme sex competition heats up. Argus Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 The issue is the devaluation of women due to cultural practices. Girls are a drain, and of no value to a family. When they grow up they marry and move away, bringing nothing. In India's case it's even worse, you have to pay a fortune to get rid of them. Boys are the ones you want since when you get old they take care of you. You go to live with them and their families and boss around their wives. Girls are still not wanted in either country. And yes, a nice war between them to kill millions of excess men would be a tidy solution. eyeball Posted February 16, 2014 Report Posted February 16, 2014 The root cause of the problem is how our economic system purposely and constantly hones it's hard-assed edge so it cuts ever deeper, into our humanity along with just about everything else. It probably won't be long until capitalism's greatest failing, it's moral imperative to produce, cuts to a similar bone here too.
