Topaz
The Libs and the Ethics Comm. is wondering where did the money really go that Public Works said they spent it on outside legal advise BUT they can't or won't say what law firm it was. So this questions if something funny is going on with tax payers money. Perhaps this is the way the Tories are going to balance the books, pretend to spent the money and then pay down the debt with the money thye never spent. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/inside-politics-blog/2013/03/public-works-officials-refuse-to-explain-60-k-in-ethics-related-legal-fees.html

RNG
Admittedly these are trivial amounts in the overall scheme of things but it does bring up a complex point. Under what circumstances is the government justified in not explaining their expenditures to the public? These strike me as being a long way removed from national security but they may infringe on personnel issues which may need to be kept private. Any others? There is probably a confidentiality agreement involved, either that or embezzlement. Edited March 24, 2013 by shortlived

Notice when these things are brought willingly to our attention, the dollar amount is usually quite small and nothing to really talk about. But when we get into millions and hundreds of millions missing or wrongly spent, then we won't hear about it. So what are they NOT talking about? I'm geussing breach of ethics that would lead to lawsuits. ... that would cost much more than the amount paid for the legal advice on how to bury them. August1991
"Where's the money?" God knows. But since it's "other people's money", who will notice? One cent taken from each 35 million Canadian would amount to $350,000 - a nice down payment on a house. Who in Canada would notice a penny plus or minus in their pocket? Would you? But $350,000 more in my account, I would notice. Such is the power of the State, a government. Harper can give $350,000 to one person, and no one else will notice.
