America, during this period, enjoyed almost a complete nuclear monopoly with the huge B-36 and very capable B-47.

Agreed, and accordingly, their is no MAD protocol when it comes to the DPRK. Far more threatening to South Korea are numerous conventional artillery and missile assets just a few kilometers from Seoul. The U.S. considers North Korea to be a small scale NBCR and weapons proliferation threat. Fortunately, China has recognized the broader implications of unrelenting support for its whacko neighbour.

Those NK 10-15kt firecrackers would just annoy the US, frankly. Sure...you could blow-up downtown Toledo...but it's certainly not going to stop the hurt locker that will follow. The biggest threat those things really represent is the ability to use EMP as a terror weapon. But even still...they'd need to crack the megaton level for that to be a USA wide threat.

Maybe the USA needs to go back as Iraq now seems to be having a small problem with terrorists ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-21857424

A militant umbrella group that includes al-Qaeda in Iraq says it was behind the wave of bombings in Baghdad on Tuesday which killed more than 50 people.

The Islamic State of Iraq described the violence as "the first drop of rain", after which it would have its "revenge" for those executed by the authorities.

On Monday, the justice minister said "nothing" would halt the executions of militants guilty of capital offences.

The bombings also came on the 10th anniversary of the US-led invasion.

Although violence has decreased in Iraq since the peak of the insurgency in 2006 and 2007, attacks are still common and at least 220 civilians were killed in February.

I think the Iraqis need more freedom delivered to them.

As long as killing folks is still part of some Islamic holy war, you're going to get suicide bombers. It's the fast track to Allah's side. You could seriously have buggered-up in life, sinner-wise...but this act will redeem you in the eyes of the Almighty. So ultimately it's up to whoever called the Fatwa of Jihad to end it. No holy...no heaven.

But the suicide bombers were not a problem before the invasion. Al-Queda was not a problem in Iraq before the invasion.

Things are now more brutal for the people if Iraq since Saddam was illegally removed from power.

You need a holy war to have suicide bombers or take slaves as booty, etc. Otherwise it's an Islamic no-no. While I understand you have a knee jerk response to blame America for everything under the Sun, America would not have been the party that issued the fatwa initially.

The Costs of War Project - 10th anniversary update:

column_1.jpg

... the United States gained little from the war while Iraq was traumatized by it. The war reinvigorated radical Islamist militants in the region, set back women's rights, and weakened an already precarious healthcare system. Meanwhile, the $212 billion reconstruction effort was largely a failure with most of that money spent on security or lost to waste and fraud

While others are concerned with trivial matters like that of the spelling of the terrorist group, I'll post this.

It is a stark reminder of the fragile state of security in a country still struggling with insurgency, sectarian division, political instability and stuttering along the road to recovery.

Recovery from an invasion based on the premise that Saddam Hussein was hiding weapons of mass destruction, which have ever been found.

Many Iraqis complain that after 10 years of rebuilding, they still lack basic public services.

The United Nations says almost seven million Iraqis, almost a quarter of the population, are living in poverty.

Electricity supplies remain unreliable. On average an Iraqi household receives just eight hours of power a day.

Four out of every 10 people in Iraq do not have access to clean water. And despite improvements, most Iraqis only have limited primary healthcare. It is estimated that up to half of all doctors have left the country.

Yes I know, people don't like Al-Jezeeram, but all of this above is on the record.

Mission Accomplished. Let's post more war porn .......

Or maybe like this .. because this is how you bring freedom to a country.

Come on we need some dead bodies in here, hopefully of children so we can see how good the mission was.

The Last Letter --- A Message to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney From a Dying Veteran

To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
From: Tomas Young

I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care.

I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of my fellow veterans who have brain injuries. I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day. I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us all—the human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.

I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power. I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done. You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole.

Well like BC_2004 said, at least he was their dictator (aka bastard). Rumsfeld looked good shaking hands with Hussein back in the day when he was their bastard. Remember the war was about oil, the Saddam being a dictator thing was a ruse.

Meh...only you care. Rummy at least was a poet. I'm sure you can protest all this by not filling your car with gas.

Hang on I'll get you another box of straws, looks like you ran out of ones to grab.

Truly...if you're serious about your outrage over dead babies, stop buying oil/gas. No need to feed the beast...you're only killing more kids.

Word.....so much sanctimonious outrage while still feeding the beast. I wonder if they know we also gas puppies and kittens ?
