Topaz Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 Journalist Steve Paiken thinks there's a very good chance that he would because he turns 54 on April 30th and he still young enough to go on to others things. He wouldn't have to worry about money since his pension kicks in at 55. There 's also could be problems at home, there's been rumors of the Mrs and a RMCP, and Ben getting ready for university and they all might want to return to Alberta and maybe Harepr would like the be the Premier. Thoughts? http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/stephen-harper-going-step-down-summer-183035420.html Quote
Shady Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 So he's going to step down as Prime Minister of Canada, with a majority government, to do other things? Like what? Quote
shortlived Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) I think being beaten by Trudeau would be a bitter end but I'm not sure he has much of a choice, unless there is a viable replacement. McKay has the F35 boondoggle hanging over his head, and I'm not so sure anyone who should still be around will have much seniority to actually play PM. I'm willing to bet $5 he doesn't, but polls are showing if Trudeau wins the liberal election he will go on to lead a minority Govt after the next election. There are of course options but I'm not too convinced they will be able to be sold federally or with as much fanfare as what Stephen Harper once possessed. WWWTT Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Heard this rumuor bouncing around for some time. Paikin is only picking up on it now and this is not new. The only thing that would keep Harper around past 2016 is another majority conservative government.Or at least the opportunity of one. Very plausible if the conservatives continue the slip trend they are currently on to see Harper leave by early 2014.Especially if his personal numbers slip. That's the big poll Harper will be looking at. WWWTT Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 I think he would want Kenney, a western for sure. Really??? With over 70 Ontario MP's I would think that an Ontario conservative MP would be an easy choice. If the conservatives lose the big majority in Ontario, kiss the conservatives goodbye! Either way,it's obvious the conservatives have peeked and are slipping. Question is how far down will they hit? Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Chris+ Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) Kenny reminds me of that old chief of security for Chretien. Kenney would be an excellent choice, a real leader, a man of principal. Does he consider himself a westerner? He was born in Oakville (GTA) and raised in Saskatchewan. Even Harper is truly from Toronto, though his heart in Calgary. Hopefully it's true, time to pass the torch to Kenney. Edited March 10, 2013 by Chris+ Quote
Shady Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 There's no reason he should step down. The Liberals and NDP aren't viable alternatives. The public would elect another Harper government. Albeit possibly a minority one instead of a majority. But he might even win another majority too. It'll be obvious to Canadians during the debates which leader is qualified to be PM, and which ones aren't. Quote

ReeferMadness Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Brian Mulroney stepped down while he still had a thundering majority. More like, Mulroney cut and run and left someone else to accept the defeat that was rightfully his. WWWTT Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 It'll be obvious to Canadians during the debates which leader is qualified to be PM, and which ones aren't. I have seen Mulcair speak publicly around 6-8 times in the last 9-10 months at fund raisers, council meetings, town halls and other functions. And believe me Harper is in for it! Mulcair has noticeably improved and is looking, sounding and acting like the next PM of Canada. Together against Trudeau, the conservatives may find themselves in the mid 20% support spectrum!
