Yep,and when people leave small communities in the bus loads what happens to those small communities???

That's why welfare is there in the first place, not just to help out those who decide to stay in the small towns but to also help the small towns!

WWWTT

If there are no jobs then it is easy... people go where there are jobs, sitting on welfare for 20 years just so you can stay in a particular place seems ridiculous, complaining about lack of jobs when Canada has to recruit workers from other countries is worse. You mat want the government to subsidize certain communities because they have no way to survive without government subsidies in the form of welfare but there is no reason for it otherwise we will always have high unemployment while at the same time having lack of workers.

Sorry if reported already, but help me out here.

Any idea the numbers of people we are talking about? I recall the welfare fraud thread from a while back, and we all went back and forth until (IIRC it was M Hardner) numbers were shown that a miniscule percentage of people where fraudulent. In other words it wasnt worth it.

Is this another case of the same thing?

Sounds like Hudak did a pole that found that people who collect welfare do not vote conservative!

Make sence as to why he would be inclined to attack poor people.

Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! That reminds me, never ask Greg to be a business partner! NEVER!

Where did I say anything about 20 years???

Better yet did Hudak say anything about 20 years on welfare?

Furthermore when someone gets welfare, they use that money to pay rent and buy food.In other words the money is circulated within the economy.Small towns sometimes go through hard times and a little help to get through the hard times is needed.

Well if they are not going to look for the jobs, and the jobs don't come looking for them what else are they to do?

Did you miss the part about slashing benefits for long term users?

And when do we determine that the help should stop? Do we wait a year or 5 years or more before we tell people to start looking for jobs somewhere else? How can we realistically complain and count people who are not actively looking for work if at the same time there are jobs that go unfilled? Should we keep small towns on welfare while jobs in some regions have to be filled by temporary workers from outside Canada?

How is this an attack on the poor? What about the poor who go out and work 40, 50 or 60h weeks to make ends meet what about them? If there is no work where you live go and find work somewhere else, how is it fair that someone will sit at home and get welfare without them bothering to go where the jobs are while at the same time having people work their asses off with little assistance from the government. Welfare should ideally be short term only it should hold you over until you find a job or when used in conjunction with other benefits to retrain in to a new career. If jobs are available but welfare recipients refuse them or do not even attempt to apply for them then those people should not be on welfare as they are unemployed by choose rather than by circumstance.

Yeah that or they use that money to buy drugs and the money is circulated within the crime syndicates.

Oh don't worry about them.

After Hudak gets elected his policies will make sure there are lots of those working a 60 hr work week to just make ends meet!

How much drugs can you buy after you buy food and pay rent when welfare only gives you 600$month?

And is that a bad thing? Is it better that they sit on welfare instead of pulling their weight?

You buy the drugs first, get your food for free at the food bank/public kitchen/other charity, and live on the street or in free shelters when/where available.

First of all. SOME of those people are welfare are people who either couldn't collect EI or who can't find a job and I'm not talking about the big cities were jobs may be easier to find. There are pockets of Ontario were unemployment is around 10% I think most tax payers are more compassionate of other people than this politican. Hudak is out to make points with voters and he's more like Harris and we all know what Ontarians went through under Harris. For those of Ontarians, who are lucky to have a good full time job then ok, you'll probably agree with Hudak, until you become one of those welfare people. The Feds change the rules on EI and then some of those people are forced on welfare because they can't find a job or they can only find 20 hour week job. Between the feds and the provinces, Canadians are getting screwed, plain and simple.

Heaven forbid someone move to where there are jobs!

Read an article about this yesterday.

It seems that BC was going to adopt a similar policy but it was turned down because people where concerned over the increase in homeless people.

But homeless people don't vote for conservatives so I can't see the conservatives giving a hoot about them

So you are against reform of the welfare system to encourage the recipients to find work?

As I've suggested in other threads, people should be able to capture the economic value of volunteerism and be able to factor it into their accounting. Harper's Government has already started us down the road of recognizing remuneration for volunteerism in the case of volunteer fire-fighters and he should expand on it.

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
