I have multiple roles too! Payrole, Sales, Logistics.. ect etc..

That 7 pager is a laugh.... please see :

"Obviously, where there are fiscal improprieties, these should be addressed"

"While First Nations are themselves aware of the challenges that exist within their

communities regarding transparency and accountability"

"While any abuse or misspending is wrong, with 3,297 First Nation elected officials in

Canada, it must be pointed out that this is absolutely not the norm as the CTF would

suggest." (Not the Norm huh?)

You may want to note that that letter brings into account "ELECTED Officials" as well! Its the CHIEFS that oppose this! Not the Elected officials...

I find it odd that the word "Chief" is only mentioned 2 times in that lengthy Press Relesase from the Chiefs...

Well the other point raised in that their income includes: other” remuneration relates to all other sources of revenue – not just actual salaries... ...

The bottom line: AFN’s recalculation of the original figures provided to the CTF by

INAC confirms that no First Nation elected official in Canada earns more than the Prime

Minister. See:

http://www.afn.ca/up...on_salaries.pdf

But yes if someone has a job as a mayor and another as a military reservist, and another as a csis agent, and another as a head of a corporation executive and another as an advisor to a congolmerates council, people would have multiple incomes from that.

Take Paul Martin for example, his only salary was not from being PM, he apparently makes 5.5 Million USD sorry that was for Hockey night in Canada.

Was it wrong for Paul Martin to earn income as PM and owner of CSL?

Incorrect.

They allow us to share their land.

Sure they do. If they had the power, you think they would share the land? They lost the land long ago. Time to move on, become ordinary Canadians with the same rights and responsibilities as every other Canadian. We should not have race based privileges.

""There's a pretty atrocious example coming from [the] Maritimes, $978,000 tax-free … for someone off-reserve,"

Why is Theresa Spence "Angry" about releasing the Salay's then?

I may want to point out that they want to see the SALARY per Chief.... NOT "earnings" as your Martin example. SALARY for being a CHIEF.... Not Salary for being a chief + Cigarette sales + Casino shares + whatever...

Salary for being a CHIEF!

No they did not "lose the land".

Legally, except where 'properly' ceded, Aboriginal title still exists.

Inform yourself and then you'll be able to discuss these issues.

Then I guess we'd better be the ones moving into our little Bantustans. All of BC, for instance, would have to be vacated. 30 million plus people crowded into tiny areas, while 300,000 live large. At least our Asian immigrants will feel right at home. (Once they become the majority, tho, they won't mess with that white guilt. They'll just tell the Indigenous Peoples to get a job.)

Like it or not we have treaties to honour to the FN and even though there maybe some chiefs that need attention on their spending, we also have some government officials on all 3 levels that need the same attention. The only way to settle all of this is by communciations and open-minds on both sides and if the PM doesn't want to that all that celebration in the House of Parliament a few years ago, inviting the FN in, was all show.

The 'Cheif' of Attawapiskat has gone on a hunger strike until the Queen or PM enter dialogue in regard to ignoring treaty.

UPDATE:

The Attawapiskat chief will fast in two teepees set up for her. She will stay in a teepee on Parliament Hill during the day, and in another on Victoria Island

0 treaties in BC. Couple of settled land claims.

Well no, they've been nice enough to allow us to share the land ... so long as we respect their Aboriginal rights and titles.

However, our governments continue to drag their feet in doing so, resulting in the current loss of patience of the First Nations Chiefs.

Allow us to share the land. What a joke. They got over run by far more advanced civilization. Now they want to live to the same standard as that civilization does - well, then they have to get off their asses and get to work, same as everybody else. If they really want to live in the old ways, let them return to their stone age culture and see how long they like that.

No, we arent using your land, we took your land, we pretended to negotiate with you, and now we are keeping it, welcome to how the world works.

I guess you'll be ok with Natives rolling up on "your" land, putting a bullet in your head, then taking back what's theirs, right? Welcome to how the world works.

Or perhaps we have a more civilized manner of resolving disputes and dealing with people that lie in negotiations.

Shedding some light on the real issues ...

Re: First Nations transparency is just good governance,Guest editorial,Dec. 5

The editorial argues First Nation transparency makes good sense, and it might reduce the need for the federal government to intervene in reserve disputes regarding financial accountability.

Others point out that Ottawa's Bill C-27 is redundant, given that most First Nation bands already provide salaries and expenses.

Worse,C-27 insists that native-controlled "entities," or companies, must report financial information on the Internet, which could give competitors an unfair advantage.

Most egregious of all,C-27 was unilaterally conceptualized and imposed; the Crown did not meet its obligation to consult in a meaningful way with aboriginals,as it is constitutionally required to do.

A lack of trust is apparent, one that emanates partly out of a recent event.

A year ago,the federal government accused the Attawapiskat First Nation of squandering money, and immediately sent in a third-party manager.

Attawapiskat refused this, and in August 2012,the Federal Court ruled Ottawa was unable to prove any financial mismanagement on the part of chief and council.

Perhaps the government should have more trust and confidence in natives, and focus more attention on developing an honourable partnership that improves First Nation outcomes in critical matters such as health and education.

I don't trust a cheif that can't spend 90 million dollars on half a hockey arena. Whre did the money go?

That's a lot of houses that were not built... Where are the houses in attawapiskat? Ohhhhh, the 90 million is gone, and we still had to ship in houses.

Thanks for the reminder jacee

I find this problematic it isn't legal to set up teepees on parliament hill.

Hahahaha. Hunger strike...right. She'll go a couple of days without deep frying something. That's about as far as her 'fast' will go. You don't get that fat by sticking to diets.

Spence: "I am willing to die for my people because the pain is too much and it's time for the government to realize what it's doing to us."

Rabble: 'She says she will consume only water, and is not afraid to die if it comes to that. "If that's the journey for me to go, I'll go."'

That's a pretty lowlife comment, and no diet will fix that.

Chretien should have followed through with his white paper, things would be better for all parties involved.

Genocide had become unpopular by then.

It's the Conservatives' fault:

In Parliament, both the Conservatives and the New Democrats insisted that the federal government must recognize its obligation to settle native claims.

Another indication of the growing impatience of Indigenous Peoples of Kanata:

Aboriginal community hopes to prod federal policy changes with new alliance, say experts

Tuesday, December 4, 2012

OTTAWA — After being at odds for years, the Assembly of First Nations and Iroquois Caucus signed an agreement protocol Tuesday that opens the door for a potential merger between both groups.

The Iroquois Caucus, which represents 100,000 people, is among the most influential political alliances in the Aboriginal community and has a well-established history of activism. Experts say the alliance marks the beginning of a more combative relationship between the assembly and the federal government.

This was likely done out of necessity,” said Michael Behiels, a University of Ottawa professor who specializes in Aboriginal affairs. “The AFN hasn’t really managed to effect much change by playing ball with the Harper government. If they’re reaching out to the (Iroquois), they may be sending the message that it’s time to take more of a hands-on approach to dealing with Ottawa.”

Behiels’ statement reflects some of the rumblings within the halls of the assembly. AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo—considered to be politically moderate by most observers—has shown signs of frustration with the Harper government since being re-elected to his position in July.

Atleo claims the Tories rarely consult with Aboriginal groups when drafting legislation that affects life on First Nations reserves. There’s also a growing concern among AFN members that Aboriginal education is severely underfunded and that proposed amendments to the Indian Act threaten historic land rights.

I really welcome this new activism of Indigenous Nations. I'm ashamed of Canada's governments' - ALL of them - their greedy, malicious, deceitful and dishonourable conduct towards Indigenous Peoples continues today.

Indigenous Nations now hold the legal power to delay or prevent major resource and other developments on their traditional lands until their Aboriginal rights are accommodated.

I wish the new AFN/Iroquois alliance well. Finally an alliance with the strength, purpose and power to confront Canada's governments and corporate powers, and make real change!

Awesome! :D
