Not a bad fight but it was hard to give condit a round. Kampman knocked out! 3 of 4 Canadians lose.

Sounds good. I have no idea what you're talking about. Perhaps make a topic that has some substance and something to discuss would help. Hahaha

Yes, GSP looked very strong in spite of the 18 months on the shelf with the ACL injury. It was his best performance in years. Condit came to fight. He gained a fan tonight... I was impressed by his courage.

Johnny Hendricks' knockout of Martin Kampmann was ... just wow. The way Kampmann went down was like something out of Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour.

Yeah Its really hard to not be a Condit fan, good for him. Man its gotta feel claustraphobic trying to fight GSP...

And yeah the Hendricks knockout was insane! If GSP doesnt move up and fight Silva, I say give Hendricks a shot at GSP.

Merlin:

This was Mixed martial Arts. The event was UFC 154. The headliner was the welterweight world title. The champion, Canadian fighter Georges St-Pierre, was returning after a long layoff for surgery and rehab for a very serious knee injury. He didn't get a tuneup fight either, first fight back was against the number one guy for title.

About the event:

One of the judges gave round 3 to Condit for getting 20 seconds of offense in. That tells you how lopsided it was, if any attack at all seemed substantial compared to the rest of the fight. Still, Condit came to fight. Best test for Georges in years. He made a fan out of me, and he was so gracious in defeat post fight as well. A real class act.

Georges' timing is so amazing. His boxing is good enough that you have to stand up and defend, but as soon as you do, you're on your back eating elbows. The ground game is a thing of beauty too. People who call GSP boring are truly idiotic. There was a real chess match going on on the ground. It was a high level jiu-jitsu match with some striking thrown in.

A great event overall too. Hendricks KO was unreal, so was Menjivar's belly-down arm bar.

Sorry, MG. Its still worth a download. You are right though I should not have put the results in the title, my bad.

How did GSP win? Was it a decision? I'm very suprised by Kampmann, most of the time he's lights-out in his stand up. I guess this time it was the other way around. Too bad, I kinda like him.

I like Kampmann too. Jon Hendricks hit him with a right hook-straight left combo very early in the fight. The right was kind of glancing, but the left was right on the chin, and Kampmann just went stiff and fell on his back. Hendricks is a southpaw, and his left hand is pretty devastating.

GSP beat Condit pretty handily using mostly takedowns, wrestling, and ground and pound. It was a 5-round decision. GSP landed an elbow late in the first round that cut Condit very badly and it got re-opened several times during the fight. Condit was a bloody mess at several times. Early in the third round, Condit hit GSP with a headkick that was pretty amazing, as he threw it in very unexpectedly at the end of a furious exchange. GSP was rocked and went down, and Condit got on him but wasn't able to do much damage before GSP was able to recover and turn the round in his favor using his superior grappling.

There was a lot of stand-up in this fight and it was pretty even. GSP certainly wasn't scared of Condit's striking. Considering what Condit can do with his fists and feet, I wasn't sure GSP would take the chance of standing with him. But the real difference was GSP's takedowns and wrestling, and only Condit's very good jiu-jitsu saved him from getting pounded out. Condit tried a lot of escapes and submissions from the bottom, and several times he had GSP in situations where GSP had to be cautious about getting caught in an arm-bar, but GSP shut those down quickly.

It was a good fight, and GSP was more aggressive than he's been in his recent fights.

Pretty good analysis Kimmy :)

Except that I thought GSP was better in the standup as well. He hit condit with some pretty huge rights, and I thought that the headkick was the only really big blow condit landed... Still! It was ALMOST enough for him to win,

Biggest sporting event of the year? I guess you forgot the Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen rematch?

There's something to be said of course for GSP's ground dominance, which is beyond insane, but c'mon his fights are a bit boring. He's turned himself into a point fighter, and usually wins by keeping guys pinned to the mat...mixed with his excellent point-boxing. He's tried, but he doesn't knock guys out, and he won't bring himself to take enough risks anymore to submit guys. IMO since he lost to Matt Serra he quick taking risks and just goes for the win for fear of losing again. Still a champ, but boring to watch. GSP's last 5 fights have been decisions, that's 25 straight rounds of no KO's/TKO's or submissions.

There's beauty in keeping a guy pinned on the mat for sure, but it's also a thing of beauty in watching a guy being able to choke others out or knocking them out with timing and power. Who in their right mind would rather watch GSP fight than Anderson Silva?

I like GSP, but have been a big Condit fan for a few years so was hoping he'd win, but GSP's wrestling & athleticism is just too dominant again. Both guys are classy all the way.

The fight was a little boring but that's really GSP's style... Control, control, control. It was nice to see him beat a really good fighter after such a long layoff. Doesn't look like the pic of the winner does it? I like GSP so I really hope he doesn't fight Silva.

Never seen GSP beat up like that.

I think GSP needs at least one more fight to get rid of the ring rust before fighting Silva. I think GSP's style is perfect for beating Silva and he stands a good chance. The only weakness in Silva's game is his sometimes weak takedown defense (and poor stand-up blocking defense), as seen in his fights with Sonnen. GSP will take Silva down with ease if he can avoid getting slaughtered on the feet and he has the ability to keep Silva pinned for most of the 5 rounds to get the decision as Sonnen almost did the their first fight.
