as is the case with likely 90% of NDP candidates they often need to run many times in order to get the name recognition that the larger parties can buy through adverstising.

Like I said at the beginning of the thread, I didn;t think the NDP had a shot here, they are proving me wrong.

I'd guess its still leaning PC based on the most recent published poll.

But you just don;t know in a bi election.

Good point about running more than once, Max. I have always thought the NDP were smart to do this. Incumbents tend to keep their seats simply by accumulated name recognition, especially at the municipal level where few voters know much about the candidates at all!

To have a new candidate every time always seemed to be shooting yourself if not in the foot at least in the big toe! :P

If the Liberals are going after the NDP in KW...

They must have some polling behind it.

Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.

Thats the 2nd piece I have seen today of Liberals attacking the NDP in Kitchener.

The first piece I had thought was a PC attack on the NDP, a smear of sorts actually, but I had since traced it to a Liberal activist.

I am not certain if the Liberals know something no one else does, or , if they are slipping into 3rd place trying to save face.

Interesting enough, it seems tha McGuinty's recent attack on Teachers is hurting him in KW, but it might help overall Liberal Polling numbers.

Really not certain whats going on...

Should be an intersting week.

I believe the reason I haven't seen anything one way or the other from the PCs is it would seem they are running a tradional front runner campaign.

Meanwhile as I type this I see an Eric Davis liberal ad on TV.

I see the Paper which supported the McGuinty Libeals last election has put out an editoral basically suggesting an ABL, or NOT Liberal vote.

The Liberals should win Vaughan, but Kitchener is where it could all fail.

The Liberal plan (and there was a very deep, very sneaky, very effective strategy to all of this) would have worked wonders if the NDP was not a contender in this riding.

You're right, the NDP IS a contender! Maybe its hard to find reasons for this but it does appear to be true. Mind you, after the vote it will be a lot easier to pick apart the entrails! :P

I think that ordinarily this riding is Tory country but they have decided to run a lightweight candidate. The Liberals have the albatross or McGuinty around their neck.

What I respect about the NDP is that they are working the hardest! In a by-election, especially just after Labour Day when nobody gives much of a damn about politics anyway, hard work can often spell the difference.

I think this one is gonna be a nail biter until the last minute!

The NDP is in the race - not just in this riding but across the province - for the same reason that I voted for the Ontario NDP last time around.

People are pissed off at the Liberals.

Left-wing and moderate progressive voters are angry at the Liberals for being Tory Lite

Right-wing and fiscal conservatives are angry at the Liberals for being worse at the till than the NDP

The only people left who back the Liberals are those who are afraid of Hudak (large number) and those who are afraid of the Ontario NDP (shrinking number)

If the PC Party and NDP both have a strong campaign next election, the Liberals will be lucky to find a dozen seats.

While I know that it is a forum poll, not a Toronto Star Poll, I have to say, a By election is different in that the voter turnout is much much lower, so even if those numbers held water (I can't see it) it is also not out of the realm that many of these people polled won't get to the polls without contact from a party.

I believe all 3 parties would have all hands on deck 2morrow and thats going to tell the real story not a poll.

Besides, It was only a few months back when WR had an insurmountable lead in Alberta according to all polsters a day before the election and we all know how that turned out for them

By-Elections are won by having motivated voters.

Teachers and labour are pretty motivated to keep Dalton from a Majority right now.

Looks like the Dipper have this one in the bag.

Well, they are working very hard. If they take it, they deserved it!

Next time the other parties should work at least as hard!

KW will NOT go NDP.. Mark my words... Its an Industrial town heavy on Tool and Die making and a town filled with people of strong pride and work ethic.. They will NEVER vote NDP..

It should be noted that while the NDP can (and I think probably will) win this seat, they can not win Vaughan.

NDP vote increased 10,000 to come from a distant 3rd to Victory.

Catherine Fife upsets status quo for the win

As I said, if they took it they would deserve it!

Just shows the result of hard work! It also shows the lack of hard work. I hate to say it but the Ontario PC Party seems stodgy and complacent. I don't know if it is Hudak or his handlers but something is very seriously wrong with the PCs.

For the last couple of elections they have looked so boring they have reminded me of that scene in the movie Airplane! where the passenger sitting beside the lead character gets so bored listening he hangs himself so he won't have to keep hearing it!

It is not enough to depend on your rival pissing people off. You also have to inspire them yourself! That is why we are seeing such an Orange surge in traditional PC ridings. People are starting to forget the reasons why they ever voted for the PCs!

Even in the MSM all the attention seems to go to Ms Horvath and not Mr. Hudak. I think the PCs are so worried about their leader making a mistake they have made his image as "hip" as polka music! If they don't turn this around, they are going to be in Opposition for a long, long, time.

Hey, as I said! If Hudak wasn't so damned boring...!

Hudak like McGuinty misplayed the riding.

I don't know who the PCs could misread a riding they have virtually owned.

I happened to be in Waterloo yesterday, and there was so much literature kicking around from all parties, it was easy to sit in a Timmies and figure out how each party was playing the riding.

In a nutshell, the PCs anti union drivel had little to no impact on a riding with almost no union base so the boogey man couldn't be found. Its a very highly educated , decent paying non union region. Thus those University educated employees currently at risk of losing their employment, would have no connection to the literature being dropped. Whatever is happening in a Union region, would have no bearing on their jobs, its nothing about them.

The Liberal Anti Teacher drivel was pointed at saying the UNION friendly NDP would put All day kindergarten at risk and run the deficit even higher. The Liberals were targeting the NDP from what I could find. Obviously this tactic failed in a region where most of the people are proud of their education, and of their teachers and believe in decent pay for professionals. I believe 1 in 3 is University educated and to get there, you gotta have good Public Education. So for whatever reason, the "Crises with teachers" was only stirring up a PC base, but not necessarily the PC voter. Perhaps that is why the Liberal Campaign stunk.

Note all candidates had an Educational University Background , teaching, or School Board, much like the Departed Witmer.

These hamfisted approaches, to a skeptical riding just didn't fly.

The NDP literature I came across appeared very simple.

"Don't give McGuinty a Majority".

that was it.

Pictures of Horwath and Fife, but a very simple message with no attacks on any specific sector. Just to choose the NDP to stop McGuinty.

Oh and on a final note, the Sign wars appeared even from all parties from the streets I cruised around on, but again they were the main streets, no idea what it looked like in the neighborhoods.

I was there when Catherine was nominated back in July. And from the word go the NDP had the strongest candidate! And the most energy.

This was never a conservative riding to be lost.It was an Elizabeth Witmer riding!

The NDP have definitely turned the page in Ontario.

This win for the NDP must have the conservatives very concerned.

Well, I'm just going by history, WWWTT. It's not as if the NDP has traditionally lost by a nose in this riding. I find that changes of the scale necessary to give Fife a win are very rare in Canadian politics.

Still, I would never say never. We have seen big waves of change before. The fact that the NDP swept Quebec is proof of that. As far as this riding, however, I would equate an NDP win to be like filling an inside straight.

Maybe from now on you will pay a little more attention to my opinions.

The NDP will not be a party in 10 years! The 905 will consume the 519 in just a few years due to sprawl and yes... it will REMAIN a Tory stronghold.

The NDP will be having anual love-ins in Down-Town toronto comprised of a Jhon Lennon look-alike and Elizabeth May leading the ewly named GNDP.. the NEW NDP utopia comprised of Jack Layton mustaches and aged folks still "hanging around" from the "great occupy movement" of.... whatever year that was..

Don't quit your day job!
