The Economist to Harper: Bullying improves NDP chances

Recommended Posts

^Doesn't this just show that they are pro free-market and western?

Yes...and that, like I said, and tried (whether well or not is up to you) to briefly demonstrate...this tends to lead quite naturally to preferring the right over the left.

Which is fine, of course. But that's the original claim, with which I think you disagreed.

Depends on the Canadian, of course. You're absolutely right for the most part.

Harper has had no qualms about telling Europeans the error of their ways so maybe this is just a little comeback. On the other hand, ignore criticism at your peril because it is not always miss directed.

Harper's in a much better position to be discussing the flaws of socialist economic policies in Europe than some "journalist" from The Economist opining on the sensitivities of the Canadian electorate. Wouldn't you agree?

Perhaps it would be more constructive to concentrate on the criticism than the source. Few on this forum would call me a spokesman for the left but I happen to agree with much of it.

Civil libertarians who oppose giving police easier access to internet users’ browsing histories were branded by Conservatives as supporters of child pornographers. They condemned greens worried about the development of Alberta’s tar sands as radicals laundering foreign money;

This is exactly what the Conservatives have done. You can't disagree with them without being branded as some sort of radical or a supporter of perverts. Your approach to this topic isn't much different.

There is absolutely no substance to the article in the OP.

In my opinion, you only demonstrated that a free market western magazine disagrees with an anti-west socialist.

There's your money quote, Sherlock...

The Economist, a mostly right-leaning British weekly...

Over the years, The Economist has developed a left-leaning audience in North America and knowing its readership, it caters to them.

Once upon a time, The Economist was a good news/business/finance weekly. Then, its writers/editors discovered a world market and started to play on its 100 year reputation.

IMHO, the cross over line was when it limited its letters to the editor to a single page; a page that is increasingly filled with press releases from government institutions. Nowadays, The Economist is as predictable and glib as Pravda once was.

Exactly. It's almost all fluff-pieces masquerading as serious analysis. It's like Time Magazine or Newsweek with a bigger vocabulary.

Sounds like regular politics to me. Kinda like when the NDP accuse Conservatives of wanting to poison the air and water, or hating the poor when they don't support NDP environment or social assistance policy. Btw, regarding intolerance of criticism and dissent, does the NDP tolerate members that don't believe in gay marriage? :)

The NDP believes that if you don't believe in gay marriage, then you are free to not be in one.

Other than that, it's none of your damned business. :)

Yup, shoot the messenger. Much easier than listening to the message. Good plan.

There's no substance to the message of Harper being a "bully", and it playing into the hands of the Canadian left. It's jut another in a long list of fluff-pieces from The Economist.

if a right wing publication like the economist is slamming harper then you know there is a problem with the CPC who continue to erode deocracy. i dont even recognize democracy in canada anymore.

1. census scandal

2. afghan detainees scandal

3. prorogation scandal

4. helena guergis scandal

5. g20 scandal

6. fake lake scandal

7. robocalls scandal

8. contempt of parliament scandal

this current government is on its last legs. after 2015 the CPC will be decimated and canada will enjoy decades of left wing rule.

In my opinion, you only demonstrated that a free market western magazine disagrees with an anti-west socialist.

I demonstrated that a free market western magazine disagrees with an anti-west socialist for exactly the same issues (human rights abuses) for which it does not take issue with a pro-western capitalist.

My entire point.

You've got some substantial evidence to back up your declarative sentences, I assume.

You gave one example.

There's absolutely no reason to support intolerance.

IMO, in reading your posts you appear to be too young to have known Canada other than how it is today. I think what you meant to say is "according to Rabble and other far left forums, democracy is dead in Canada and I support that opinion". :)

I think you've about nailed it.

Yes, let's marginalize the kid's opinions because of his or her age, something s/he has no control over.

probably entitled baby boomers these people are.

I am extremely grateful to Pierre Elliot Trudeau for having started the trend of enriched entitlements. I am one of his benefactors and happily, I am unaffected by current Conservative restraint measures. Life is good.

boomers are the ones responsible for destroying the environment.

And a good thing too. Otherwise, you would have to find something else to save rather than the environment. Of course, there are always the polar bears or baby seals.
