GostHacked Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 it was an astute move politically, he isn't going to lose the black or Hispanic vote because of it, he has no hope of getting the hard right evangelicals or the racist vote but gays and their direct families probably make up 10% of the population so locking up that demographic can give him enough of an edge to win reelection...and Romney can't go there without losing support from the right... Agreed, it's perfect timing. More political points, Obama touts the CIA stopping another panty bomber (which turns out is a Brit National with CIA credentials) ... comes out for gay marriage .. yes indeed the election season in the USA is around the corner! Shakeyhands Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Maybe we can come to an agreement on this. I would say that youthful indiscretions don't matter, generally, prior to 18 and to a lesser degree prior to college graduation. Hmmm... Like this ones mistakes. Guest American Woman Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Agreed. Now he has taken a postion, he should pursue it. He does not represent the states, he was elected by the whole country. Exactly. I don't understand this "state issue" mindset - it's not a state issue. A spouse is entitled to benefits, some of them federal (social security, for example), therefore it's a federal issue - and he should be pursuing it as such in light of his statement. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 (edited) As positive as the POTUS' stance on SSM is, there's also a lot of morans like the good ol' boys'n'girls down in North Carlinuh, which, last I checked, was a state in America. Yeah, it's IN America - but it's not America. Last time I checked, it was legal in several states for gays to marry, so using your mindset ... good for America, eh? They stand for America. Furthermore, your comment about it being legal for cousins to marry in N.C. is just plain ignorant - considering it's legal for cousins to marry in Canada. What point do you think you were making? So good on Obama for "evolving" now let's just hope more of your country crawls from the primordial oooze of superstition and ignorance sooner rather than later. I wonder who's going to crawl out from their primordial oooze of superstition and ignorance sooner - the U.S. or Canada? I'm betting that it will be legal for gays to marry throughout the U.S. before your head of state can be a Catholic or married to a Catholic. Edited May 11, 2012 by American Woman Quote

Guest American Woman Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Ah, so you get to decide what represents America, then? What represents "America" is what is the same throughout America. We have 50 states. One state doesn't represent the whole. Not first cousins. Guess again. Weak shit. Just like the comment I was responding to. Quote

Guest American Woman Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Nobody said it did. Just your usual bellicose defensiveness kicking in. Ummm. Yeah. You did. "So you can marry your cousin in N.C., but not your same sex partner. America!" See, rather than "America," that should read "North Carolina!" It has nothing to do with "America" and everything to do with "North Carolina." If you still don't get it, you're beyond my willingness to help - but I'm sure they have night classes for that sort of thing in Canada. Huh, how about that. Much more interesting than whatever nonsense you're spouting about the head of the Church of England. Yeah, how about that, huh? Kinda shows your ignorance, eh? - As it tells you that Canada is the ignorant back hills country that you were portraying N.C. as - going by your criteria. But of course anything pertaining to Canada's "primordial oooze of superstition and ignorance" isn't interesting at all - so much more interesting when it pertains to the U.S., eh? Quote
bleeding heart Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 Speaking as a very liberal sort of guy (I preface this way to avoid the "your horse in the race" kind of response), I find it mildly interesting that Dick Cheney's stance on gay marriage--identical to Obama's, except that he came to it earlier--did not win him too many accolades from the liberals generally. Ah, partisan politics...... Quote “There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver." --Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007

Nope, that's how you chose to read it because you read everything through your strange little superiority/inferiority complex that pervades nearly every post you make. It's quite sad, actually. Like I said: North Carolina is part of America. And it's not some isolated, unique snowflake separate from the larger American milieu. So i don't think it would be out of line in saying that a constitutional ban on gay marriage, supported by a majority of voters, is something that would happen only in America or someplace even more benighted. So yeah: America! Yeah, how about that, huh? I'm sure most don't have a clue as to the reality. Case in point. Black Dog trying to portray North Carolina as backwards because it's legal for first cousins to marry - yet it's legal throughout Canada. The south is not the south of the 1860s or even the 1960s - and likely never was the way they portray it. Quote

The south is not the south of the 1860s or even the 1960s - and likely never was the way they portray it. Some Canadians have never progressed past the grainy American TV coverage of civil rights battles they watched 50 years ago. GostHacked Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 So when we talk America, the usual suspects come out and make arguments where sometimes they are not. When these same people talk Canada, you rarely if ever hear those Canadian posters act like those few cry baby Americans. Good thing American Woman and BC-2004 do not represent America, because that would mean I might have the wrong impression of what the USA is all about. Quote

punked Posted May 11, 2012 Report Posted May 11, 2012 I just want to point out, Romney the publican nominee, comes from a family that a generation ago left the states because their beliefs on marriage weren't accepted. Go figure. Quote
