For once, it was Ron MacLean who stirred up controversy on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, rather than his long-time partner Don Cherry.

MacLean opened up Wednesday night's broadcast of Game 6 between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals by referencing the terrorist attacks of Sep. 11, 2001.

"It's New York and Washington, the economic and political engines of America. United in the birth of the country, they're also linked in tragedy. They were the twin targets of the coordinated attacks on 9-11," MacLean said. "It's crazy to compare what the emergency respondents did at that time."

MacLean, however, might have crossed that very line by drawing similarities between what emergency personnel went through on that day and what NHLers go through during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

"You can't help but be struck by the players and the way they've played these games. They are like police officers, they are like firefighters," MacLean said. "You can't fight fire with ego. The pain these men have faced, the price they keep on paying, the hearts they keep on lifting."

Yes it is crazy to compare the two things, so why did he do it?

I bet if this was Don Cherry the usual crowd would call him a senile dinosaur that should be fired by the CBC.

This CAN'T be an attempt to divide Cherry and McLean between left and right can it ?

Are we getting tired of this kind of branding yet ? I sure am.

McLean is left ? Cherry is right ?

Wilma Flintstone is left ? Fred is right ?

Fish is left ? Chips are right ?

I believe the Western Conference is left and the Eastern Conference is right, but within them the Kings are left and the Coyotes are right, the Rangers are left and the Capitals are right, and New Jersey is centrist.

That's why the "lame-stream media" is so in favour of an LA-NY final.

Thanks for clearing that one up for us, BM.
