Topaz Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 Foreign Affairs, which I don't understand, I thought this would be under Heritage, is selling off art produced by Canadian artists. I'm not sure how I feel about this one, but the comments at the bottom of the following article, Canadians don't like it. The reason for selling them is to reduce the department 5-10% as it part out getting rid of the deficit the Tories created. I wonder if the PMO will try selling off the Liberal PM's hanging on Parliamnet Hill? http://ca.news.yahoo.com/psst-want-riopelle-feds-selling-off-priciest-works-080503406.html Quote
Black Dog Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 As long as this: The idea is to sell the art to museums and public institutions, but at a 30 per cent discount. remains the case, I have no issue with this. Quote

Guest Manny Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 Heritage art should be protected. The CPC screwed up the financial surplus we had and now they're quietly selling off items important to Canadian culture to pay off their debts. No standing government, which is only temporal, should have the right to remove heritage items for the sake of covering up their botched economic policies. Quote

Selling it to museums and public institutions. Let's put it this way: I'd rather they sell these works to institutions that will make them available to Canadians to see than keep them socked away on the walls of some embassy halfway across the world. The_Squid Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 As long as it isnt to private collections then I don't think it's an issue. Quote
Guest Derek L Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 This seems rather misleading when contrasted with the OP’s link: Baird orders stop to sale of valuable federal art, including Rioppelle, Kurelek But as mentioned in the story: "While endorsing the current policy objectives of showcasing emerging and contemporary Canadian art at our Embassies, High Commissions and Official Residences abroad, to ensure risks are managed and to make annual purchases self-sustaining, as well as part of a savings initiative, a selection of pieces from the collection will be offered for sale." Shouldn’t we sell off this profitable old stuff and replace it with new Canadian art? Quote

The_Squid Posted April 30, 2012 Report Posted April 30, 2012 Just heard on the radio that Baird stopped the sale.... I guess Baird tried to keep it hush-hush to avoid public input. He was found out and, suddenly, this isn't a good idea anymore! Quote

But keep trying , you may find one yet. It is a hope that the Canadian Govt. will sell off the line painting we bought for 2 million to put in a Museum in Ottawa. The "artist" who produced it is still laughing at the stupidity of ANYONE who would buy such an icon of government insanity. Edited May 1, 2012 by Tilter Quote
