Jack Weber Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 What if he had said that Hitler wasn't so bad? The team built their new stadium in little Havana and are hoping to gain support from a fan base that pretty much ignored them when they played in Fort Lauderdale. If you fled Cuba because of Fidel and the manager of a team that's trying to court your support came out in support of Fidel, wouldn't you be a bit PO'd? Uh....Marge Schott??? Boges Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Uh....Marge Schott??? She was the owner, it's not like she'd suspend herself. Quote
Jack Weber Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) Cosider where this is taking place... South Florida... Alot of still disgruntled Batistaites living in those regions... Also consider that The Oz Man is from Venezeula and is a known friend of Hugo Chavez... The same Hugo Chavez that just had cancer treatment in Cuba... This is a PR move by the Marlins front office.Ozzie is Ozzie and, being a White Sox fan, know he's prone to say fairly dumb things... If he was still with The Sox,I'll bet nothing would have happened... Edited April 10, 2012 by Jack Weber Quote The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!
The_Squid Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 What are the limits then ? If he was manager of Seattle Mariners and not the Florida Marlins (whose stadium is in Little Havana) the repercussions would have been very different, in all likelihood. Quote

The_Squid Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 What if the manager of the Mariners called Ichiro is nip? First off, that's not funny. Secondly, he should be fired. Quote
Boges Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 First off, that's not funny. Secondly, he should be fired. Oh so racial insensitivity: Bad. Voicing your support for a brutal dictator: Not as Bad. Quote
Jack Weber Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Whatever Ozzie said,he's entitled to his political views.I highly doubt, although I cannot verify, that the Florida (sorry Miami) Marlins have policy on speaking one's mind about admiration for any particular world leader... I'm fairly certain this suspension is a sop to the Batistaites that will be offended by a Latin manager speaking glowingly about someone who deposed there freedom loving dearly departed leader... He's also no Marge Schott... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marge_Schott Quote The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!
The_Squid Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Oh so racial insensitivity: Bad. Voicing your support for a brutal dictator: Not as Bad. Fewer people care about Castro and Cuba in Seattle than they do in Florida. Is that so hard to understand? Quote
Shady Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) Irrelevant. Watching porn at work, on work computers is against company policy. Talking politics or what leader of a country you like does not fall into that realm. Nonsense. Alientating your fan base is also against company policy. Edited April 10, 2012 by Shady Quote
jbg Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 It's too bad that the best ball players, race car drivers and so on have to rely on their popularity and not just their skill to make a living. The Marlins are a private business. That manager's remarks would hurt badly in the Marlins' local market. I believe management was well within their rights to discipline behavior that could hurt attendance. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

I don't think some people realize how objectionable a large portion of the population of Miami found Guillen's comments. Anyways, next up for Guillen? I say he gets a job as manager of a baseball team in Alabama, and goes on to profess his love of Bull Connor! Quote
