When does 'charity' become 'politics'?

Preaching politics from a pulpit- religious newsletter, incessantly, should eventually cause such to become a taxable corp. not a charitable org.

Foundations that accept donations that may qualify for tax deductions need to be careful about the politics they promote.

Foreign donations to certain groups that have a political bent need to be made aware of the rules re 'charitable orgs."

Just sayin.

Promoting sound environmental laws and opposing a government who's policies are harming the environment is not political activism. It is environmental activism.

Well then, what if they are promoting a party that has an environmental platform?

Depends on the circumstances.

Let's say they fund a party or spokesman, or candidate that's running on a platform against say oil sands or supporting McGuinty's Green Energy plan for example?

Clearly, funding political parties is not a charitable use of dollars. Your post before said promoting, not funding.

I did say in the o.p. tax deductible donations which in effect amounts to funding. So let us say promoting or funding or accepting politically based donations.

I wonder if Suzuki is getting donations that are deductible for his foundation and if he is non partisan- non political?

David Suzuki resigns to save foundation from ‘bully’ charitable status threats

Sarah Boesveld Apr 14, 2012 – 6:00 PM ET

David Suzuki: “I want to speak freely without fear that my words will be deemed too political,” he wrote.

Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki has stepped down from the board of his foundation over fears his political views could put its charitable status at risk as Ottawa cracks down on organizations deemed to be too politically active.

In a letter to his supporters on Friday, the former Nature of Things host said he left the David Suzuki Foundation’s board of directors because he wanted to be able to speak freely “without fear that my words will be deemed too political and harm the organization of which I am so proud.”

The March 30 budget said charities would soon have to report more information about their political activities and sources of foreign funding.

They’d also have to limit spending on advocacy to 10% of their budget.

"As an earlier British investigation found, Canada has held no less than 110 lobbying meetings with European and British politicians in the last two years to try to have Alberta oil designated as clean."
