I think having deals with China, including for our energy sector, are forward-thinking. We do have to consider that many government-owned Chinese corporations have billions in stock and investment in the Alberta Tar Sands (which again is not inherently bad). What is however that these corporations that own stock in Syncrude for example have made clauses that say Syncrude CAN NOT refine that oil in Canada... they want it refined in China so they can have more high paying jobs there. I don't think Canada should relegate itself to a colonial offshoot of the U.S. or China. To be fair though, it would take billions to invest in refineries here and it'd take years to get them ready so it's not so cut and dry either.

Manufacturing has been dead in Canada and the U.S. ever since corporations could freely move their capital to the Third World. They have been on life-support for decades.

The most twisted thing about all this is how poisonous the idea of state owned enterprise is at home and yet here we are catering to state own enterprise abroad like it was the Holy Grail.

What's truly hilarious though is when you're regarded as a whacked out lefty for being critical of such an apparent anti-socialist freedom-loving, crime-fighting, laissez-faire capitalist as Stephan Harper suck-holing to a state-owned enterprise in a state-managed economy that's run by a bunch of thugs, thieves and murderers.

These are the definitely The Crazy Years.

Oh well, the bloody pandas go well with the fuzzy sweater and kitten.

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Nice post. I study one thing more challenging on different blogs everyday. It'll all the time be stimulating to learn content from other writers and follow somewhat something from their store. I’d prefer to make use of some with the content on my blog whether or not you don’t mind. Natually I’ll offer you a link in your web blog. Thanks for sharing.

Steaks for everyone!

Harper, Wen tighten ties, sign deal for beef exports

China and Canada on Wednesday signed a series of agreements to boost modest levels of bilateral trade, including a deal that Ottawa said should allow the immediate resumption of Canadian beef and tallow exports after a nine-year pause.

The deals were inked in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People by Premier Wen Jiabao and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who arrived on Tuesday with a large trade delegation in a bid to ramp up exports and reduce Canada’s reliance on the huge U.S. market.

Canadian officials said the deal on beef should allow the immediate resumption of beef and tallow exports, which Beijing halted in 2003 after Canada discovered a case of mad cow disease.

China committed itself in 2010 to resuming trade in Canadian beef and tallow. However, commercial trade has not resumed because of Beijing’s standing restrictions on beef containing the growth enhancer ractopamine.

Canada says it is determined to open up new markets and reduce reliance on the United States, which takes about 75 per cent of all Canadian exports.

Ottawa intensified its calls to diversify exports last month after Washington vetoed a pipeline that would have carried crude from the western province of Alberta to Texas.

China does not import any Canadian oil, but says it is interested in doing so. The two nations also signed an extension of a memorandum of understanding on energy issues covering oil, gas and nuclear energy as well as trade and investment.

“This agreement will increase opportunities to attract capital investment, and improve access to markets for Canada’s energy resources, technology and related services,” a Canadian statement said.

Hey Buddy , No problem at all, except for abject ignorance.

It is not an insult when the point one is making is completely unreal and quite frankly stupid.

Economy is economy, human rights is human rights.

Besides, I don't think Canada's human right situation is better than China.

The very best investment you can make in your future and your intellect is to spend $87 on a passport. There s a whole world beyond your parents basement.

If nothing else, it will save you the embarassment of making statements like that. You could start your trip in Tibet.

The government should do something.

I was in China for 30+ years.

And I am in Canada for 10+ years.

Did you wear those glasses to look through the earth to see what is happening in China instead of just listen what cooperate media tell you and your misleading curriculum text book told you?

So tell me, when you were in China what sort of information on world events did you get from your media? Answer: none. If you had any doubts about the veracity of that info, you just checked Google, right? Answer: no. Or you could just check out thee truth at your Falun Gong meeting. Answer: only if you enjoy prison.

Tell me again how human rights in China are the same as they are in Canada.

The government should do something.

From your post I can see, actually, you know nothing about China. You are just another one who want to cost my time again. I have many post talking about this topic. You can search forum to find it.

There are much more newspapers, TV/radio stations, magazines, books in China than here in Canada. Even now, I buy most books either from US or from China, not in Canada.

I also watch BBC, ABC, listen VOA sometimes when I was in China. Especially VOA special English in a slow speed to improve my English listening skill.

I used infoseek, yahoo, altervister to search in the web before I know google and later I use Baidu quite often.

Before Falun Gun used by US as anti-China tool, several my friends practice it. After that, they practice other things like TaiJi and hundreds of others. They are very well now in China, now one of my friend even become a leader of a department of one of the top Universities in China.

Now, Falun Gun, most oversea Chinese know it is just one of the CIA supported anti-Chinese governement organizations whose work is create rumors for a little small money.

When you search google for lot of other things, it appeared on the top of the result, see how corporate media work with CIA to fool you?

The left was right, harper does have a secret pangenda, he is going to take those pandas and paint them white and ship them to the arctic, just to fool the lefties into thinking thatr there is lots of them up there. You r4eally think your ilk will allow any pipeline to be built? By the time it went thru all the bullshit, it would be years away, just like trying to get a new refinery built.

That's just another example of an inferiority complex on the part of some. Trade has increased by 700% over the last few years, and Chinese officials were the ones talking about a free trade deal. Also, the Chinese state news agency constantly has stories about Canada.

We do not usually agree Smallc but now we do.

During my time in China watching their tv programs I have seen much mention about "Jia na da"

They are actually very fond of Canadian east coast sea-food particularly Newfoundland caught fish!

We have an excellent opportunity here to advance many abundant natural resources originating from work depleated areas of Canada!

However I believe that Harper and his conservatives have tainted our relations with the Chinese beyond repair and new fresh NDP government is required to re-vitalize renewed partnerships!
