Boges Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 (edited) 2011 has clearly been a crappy year for Canadian Athletics.http://www.thestar.com/sports/figureskating/article/1101085--patrick-chan-wins-lou-marsh-award?bn=1 Patrick Chan, the 20-year-old figure skater from Toronto, has won the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s athlete of the year.Chan, who won his first world championship in April with a world record score and went undefeated for the calendar year, topped a shortlist of athletic compatriots that included last year’s winner Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds; speed skater Christine Nesbitt; shot putter Dylan Armstrong; Milwaukee Brewers reliever John Axford; and show jumping champion Eric Lamaze. What a crappy list!Joey Votto was great . . . in 2010.I guess I can't argue with the decision. But it's pretty sad that Canada's #1 International Athletic achievement came in Figure Skating. And this is the guy that last week said he'd get more love in China than Canada. Was this decision an attempt to Ballwash him?http://edmonton.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20111208/canada-skater-patrick-chan-feels-unappreciated-111208/20111208/?hub=EdmontonHomeI bet if Tim Thomas was Canadian he'd have won. msj Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 While I find the "that isn't a sport" and "Canada's #1 athlete is from figure skating which is so sad" to be beyond pathetic a couple of points: 1) Sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. 2) I wonder what the collective size of all your beer guts are (I don't have a beer gut because I actually partake in physical activity). Well, it, like ballroom dancing, fits the definition (and I've tried ballroom dancing - it's a pretty intense workout and I'm a guy who can run a half-marathon in under one hour 30 minutes). Oh, and what size is your beer gut? My waist is a 31/32. msj Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 and few compare to ballet for fitness and athletic ability, but it isn't a sport.... Let's try again: Sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Athletic: 1. physically active and strong; good at athletics or sports: an athletic child. 2. of, like, or befitting an athlete. 3. of or pertaining to athletes; involving the use of physical skills or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina: athletic sports; athletic training. Figure skating is a physical activity that requires physical skills including strength, agility and stamina which are showcased during competitions. Once again: what size is your beer gut? So Figure Skating is a sport because we're all fat. Is that your thesis? Are Curling and Golf sports? What about being a MLB Pitcher? You can have a "beer gut" and be proficient in those sports. Figure Skating is a sport like Gymnastics is a sport. You have to be incredibly fit to do this sports. But it's not the most masculine thing in the world to watch. Also sports that require a group of subjective judges to determine the outcome puts Figure Skating down a notch to me. Like many "Olympic" sports people seem to care during Olympics but between Olympics no many people care. I'll concede I watched Jamie Salle and David Pelltier get jobbed in Salt Lake City and was a bit miffed. BTW some evidence that Figure Skating is the second most watched sport in Canada? I skim over my guide for sports and I'm more likely to see Poker, Darts or Bowling on Sports channels than I am to see some Figure skating competition. Edited December 14, 2011 by Boges Quote

Jerry Sandusky jokes are always funny. Jerry Sandusky walks into an elementary school just as classes are let out for the day, when a teacher approaches him & asks, "so which child is yours?"Sandusky replies: "I don't care, surprise me." On a scale of 1-10, how old is Jerry Sandusky's boyfriend? Q: What was Jerry Sandusky's defensive philosophy at Penn State? A: Get penetration and always cover the Tight End. msj Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 So Figure Skating is a sport because we're all fat. Is that your thesis? Oh, another one with reading comprehension difficulties. No, figure skating is a sport because it meets the definitions I have already provided (and linked to) above. Check it out. Maybe learn English while you're at it. As for the beer gut thing: in my experience it's usually lazy "bigger" people who are clueless as to how physical an activity really is. Are Curling and Golf sports? What about being a MLB Pitcher? I consider them sports. They meet the definitions provided above. You can have a "beer gut" and be proficient in those sports. Certainly. O and D lineman in football certainly can have huge guts, too. Unlike the whiners on this thread, however, they are actual athletes. Beer guzzling isn't known to be a sport although it can be competitive at times. Figure Skating is a sport like Gymnastics is a sport. You have to be incredibly fit to do this sports. But it's not the most masculine thing in the world to watch. Also sports that require a group of subjective judges to determine the outcome puts Figure Skating down a notch to me. So it's a sport but since it's not "masculine" it's not good enough for you? I suppose bodybuilding is also not a sport because it has judges making subjective judgements? But that's more masculine, right? (Even when the women do it, right?) Like many "Olympic" sports people seem to care during Olympics but between Olympics no many people care. I don't know about the popularity of figure skating and don't care since the popularity of a sport is completely irrelevant as to whether or not it meets the definition of sport. Boges Posted December 14, 2011 Author Report Posted December 14, 2011 (edited) Dude I'm not questioning if Figure Skating is a sport or not. It clearly is. I just don't know what the "beer guts" of the rest of us has to do with anything and why you bragging about your half-marathon time adds anything to this thread. Figure Skaing is an artistic sport that appeals to mostly women. Also much like Biatholon, Bob-Sledding, Gymnastics, Track and Field etc only see broad appeal in the two-weeks every four years that there's an Olympics. My statement in this thread is that it's a sad year in Canadian sports that a Figure Skater is our top athlete in a non-Olympic year. I personally think George St Pierre should be the default Canadian Athlete of the year as long as he hold the UFC Welterweight title. But because MMA is a "brutal" sport the people at the Star probably will never nominate him. Edited December 14, 2011 by Boges Quote

I just don't know what the "beer guts" of the rest of us has to do with anything and why you bragging about your half-marathon time adds anything to this thread. Figure Skaing is an artistic sport that appeals to mostly women. Still having reading comprehension problems. It doesn't matter if figure skating appeals to mostly women - IT IS STILL A SPORT BY DEFINITION. As for the beer gut thing: it's people who are physically unable who usually make such complaints as you and wyly. People like me who are physically active have a reference point and know just how hard, say, ballroom dancing, is because of that reference. Also much like Biatholon, Bob-Sledding, Gymnastics, Track and Field etc only see broad appeal in the two-weeks every four years that there's an Olympics. Irrelevant to whether it meets the definition of sport. My statement in this thread is that it's a sad year in Canadian sports that a Figure Skater is our top athlete in a non-Olympic year. That figure skater had an incredible year and is worthy of winning the reward regardless of it being a non-Olympic year. They have numerous competitions and world cup like events between Olympics which are extremely competitive. I personally think George St Pierre should be the default Canadian Athlete of the year as long as he hold the UFC Welterweight title. But because MMA is a "brutal" sport the people at the Star probably will never nominate him. It may be brutal but I always think of Bruno when it comes to the UFC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqs8x2fETFc Quote If a believer demands that I, as a non-believer, observe his taboos in the public domain, he is not asking for my respect but for my submission. Boges Posted December 14, 2011 Author Report Posted December 14, 2011 As I said in my first post. When considering the other athletes that were on the Short-list. Chan was clearly the most accomplished. Just sad that no Baseball player, Hockey player, Basketball Player, Soccer Player or any popular sports that you generally see discussed on sports pages do well. BTW how can you comment on wyly and my fitness levels based on our opinion of Figure skating? That's a pretty ignorant opinion. Quote
