December 6, 2011

Ottawa – The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for FedNor, today launched an online consultation on Open Government and invited Canadians to participate.

"We want to hear from Canadians on how we can advance the Open Government initiative in Canada," said Minister Clement. "The valuable input we receive will help us develop an action plan for the International Open Government Partnership, and help make the Government of Canada more accessible to Canadians."

The consultation will take place from December 6, 2011, to January 16, 2012, and can be accessed though the Open Government website. Participants can make their views known online, by email or by letter. A report on the findings from the consultation will be published in March 2012.

Has anyone here stepped up to take this survey, besides me ?

I did. I don't believe this initiative will make our governance any more transparent in time to make a difference but...I live in hope.

I still maintain the only solution to opacity in our governance is to basically turn our politicians, CEO's and senior bureaucrats into Borg-like drones. As I've said before, concentrate transparency at the very highest levels of society and watch decency and honesty trickle down through the rest like it was so much wealth.

Turn Orwell's Telescreens into two-way windows. I think the invasion of their secrecy should trump their expectation of privacy during their terms of office, something for which as a taxpayer I'd be willing to pay them millions of dollars I might add. Would you be willing to give up your secrecy for anything less?

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
