I did not know there was a little French owned island right off Newfoundland...should Canada and France get into it they could setup up there and bomb Canadian territory...unlikely yes but how come we haven't paid them for it yet?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Pierre_and_Miquelon

Saint Pierre and Miquelon (French: Collectivité territoriale de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ pjɛʁ e mikˈlɔ̃]) is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France.[1] It is the only remnant of the former colonial empire of New France that remains under French control.[4]

we should pay a couple billion or so for this land

they basically rely on canada anyway and share more in common with canada than france

Greenland would be worth a few trillion

It would. Or we just move in and save ourselves the bill. Just get a couple thousand Inuit to move there, declare indigenous rights to the land (and ice) and then get themt o join Canada. We'll make it a province 'n stuff.

We have bigger things to worry about than a French attack from Saint Pierre et Miquelon...

I think the civic elections in Inuvik are probably of greater importance....

not saying its possible but it doesn;t make sense to have a france controlled island that close to Canada

I don't think the Danes would be too happy..

Why not? You don't like having neighbours?

Depends...if the neighbour is a European country in North American territory ...no

Greenland should be ours too

North America? You are including the USA in this? if any American has even ever heard of these islands I am quite certain that they don't see it as the security threat that you do.

Your fear of France (all of Europe?) is bizarre...

Here's an interesting news clip about a dispute with the islands from 1992: http://archives.cbc.ca/politics/international_politics/clips/16875/

the islands are french and the people see themselves as french...what's with imperialism are you itching for a war with a nuclear power? not that france would need nukes to dust us off...

the people in greenland would disagree...you're really intent on another falkland islands event aren't you?...with us re-playing the part of argentina with the same end result...

I'd rather pay a few billion for Greenland.

To hell with Greenland.....Turks and Caicos is where it's at B)

Alaska sold for a measly .02 an acre or $7.2 million back in the day.

British Columbia, or whoever it was in Ottawa and London that spoke for it, was invited to make a bid but passed. How freekin' moronic was that in hindsight?

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,
a liberal, oh fanatical criminal

I'm good with that and we don't have to pay for them they'll join us for free, well not not exactly free we'll then have to take in their entire population but that's no problem there's only 30,000 of them..they'll be a better island vacation resource than PEI ...

ya but many americans didn't think alaska was a good deal either, hindsight is easy...canada had a chance at hawaii as well but that would've imperialistic of us, which the americans had no problem doing...

The British decided not to make a bid to Russia to buy Alaska. DOH!

Considering their unemployment rate was 5.4% in 06, they wouldn't even be a burden to us.

and those that do come canada looking for work are no more a burden than others from the carib...make the islands canadian quite likely their unemployment would drop as well...

i think this is an idea that seems to have support from canadians of all political leanings...it's our governments that have an issue with it...

It's the potential can of worms of opening up the constitution to do so, and according to wiki has support across the political spectrum.

constitution should be opened anyways it's way to rigid as it is in regards to change...no need to bring the islands in as a full province a territory like nunavut would be fine...
