I'm all about the government investing in equipment to defend Canada's sovereignty over the Arctic territories, but after the untold billions on those damn fighter jets this is just more money they're diverting from the looming pension/health care crisis, as baby-boomers retire.

Enough with the fighter jets, they are jet powered fighters not fighter powered jets. We don't say sub nuclears, locomotive diesels or cycle motors, so what's with fighter jets.

That would be an interesting turn. I agree that nuclear subs would be ideal, but I won't hold my breath.

I don't think we can afford them yet. Maybe after next election if the Tories win. The oil sands would have to be rolling and we'd need a manufacturing boom

Ah, the debt to GDP ratio, both federally and nationally, is already starting to decrease. We can afford anything we want to make the funding available for.

The public will be upset with potential deficit spending ( good on Martin, manning, and Harper for pushing fiscal responsibility) and then there is the obscene cost of Medicare and pensions coming up for the retired baby boomers.

The pension cost to the federal government really won't be that high, and the medical costs really aren't going to change for them either.

I think nuke subs would be great and do make sense for us, I don't know if it would be politically possible to get some. It would be nice to play under the ice for a long period of time and since Canada is wanting to play a deny role in the arctic, nuke subs are perfect for denying space.

Wow, for me it just seems like yesterday the Liberal government of Chretien was buying these things and the reports of the amazing "deal" we were getting. Shortly thereafter of course it became quite apparent they were no deal at all. Another Liberal boondoggle the Conservatives plan to slay. Will they destroy them (the subs) too?

Defending a country costs billions. That's a simple reality.

when were we ever attacked??? that's a simple reality too...but it's all good all the billions are adding up fast you'll soon find out why the US economy is going to shit, defense spending will come at a cost of other real priorities, healthcare, pensions, education, infrastructure...all to be spent on useless military toys for a segment of the population that produces zero economic benefit for the country...which in the end will verify that conservatives are the worst financial managers and spell the end to the conservative dictatorship we live under...which is the only good thing about majority governments, give them enough rope and they can always be counted on to hang themselves with it... You don't simply neglect the defence of your country because something hasn't happened. We have to assert our sovereignty. And dictatorship? Please.

 ya who are they gonna deny it to  they'll do bugger all to stop anyone from using the NWP the americans just ignore us as does any other country that wants to use it...so we'll spend billions so that harper can strut around pretending to be captain canada...

Except entitlement programs eat up most of the USA budget. Freedom ain't cheap and we in the west get to enjoy our lifestyle by winning two world wars and the cold war. Then there is the potential nut bar dictator going off that needs to be dealt with. Going for the Godwin award here but, after ww2, the tolerance for nut bar dictators with a sizable military capable of expansion is next to zero. We won't make that mistake again.

Govts main role is to provide an environment for economic activity and production take place, part of that is funding the military which helps protect and enforce said environment.

just who is going to steal our ice flows??? come on tell me!

Dictatorship-A government controlled by one person, or a small group of people. In this form of government the power rests entirely on the person or group of people.

we have no control of this government they are free to do anything they please, there are no checks or balances...for the first time in my life I envy the american political system...

Stephen Harper and his government are acting well within the established conventions of our parliamentary democracy. Its not his fault if our conventions basically promote a benign dictatorship when one party controls a majority of seats in the house. Jean Chretien anyone?

I always laugh at the notion we are living under a dictatorship.... its an insult to all those in the world who are living or have lived under a dictator.

If having a nuke sub or two up in the arctic keeps the Russians from popping oil derricks on our continental shelf without paying us royalties, then that's a solid return on investment.

how wonderful 4-5 nuclear subs at a billion per just to watch ships sail through the NWP and a photo-op for captain canada...pure economic genius...I'm betting a half dozen inuit in motor boats could do the same for a wee bit less...

You surmised from a 7 word post I know nothing about political history? A tongue and cheek post at best making light of the current situation the political executive is faced with in the USA currently.
