WWWTT Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 (edited) Well its not a done deal yet but it looks like a possible scenario my older brother told me about after the provincial election may become reality. And that is one of the opposition members running for the house speaker position and actually getting it. This scenario would take a vote away from the opposition, resulting in ties for future votes forcing the speaker to break the tie and traditionaly the speaker votes in favour of the government. Thanks Ontario PC! WWWTT Edited October 26, 2011 by WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! Moonlight Graham Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 not much preventing someone from crossing the floor to the Liberals either. They could offer a sweet position and whammo! A bi-lection is also a possibility obviously. Would be crazy to have one for a vacant non-liberal spot and watching 1 riding determine the fate of the province. Boges Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 Are there any MPPs that anyone can think would cross the floor? I can't think of any. Liberals are usually the ones that cross the floor. The only Conservative I can think of that's crossed the floor since the merger (I know that's federal) is that puke Garth Turner. There's no law that says Frank Klees has to vote with the government in a tie. Who's going to punish him if he doesn't? I doubt anyone in opposition will vote for him though. It does make things very weird in the PC caucus though. Quote

This "Frank Klees" guy you mention is pretty much crossing the floor by announcing his intention for the speakers job! Every MPP knows this scenario and he is breaking ranks for his own interest! olp1fan Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 I hope Mclamer gets his majority i am sick and tired of hearing the losers say the people put mcguinty on a short leash when he only lost a majority by 1 seat how the crap is that a short leash? Quote
WWWTT Posted October 27, 2011 Author Report Posted October 27, 2011 I was watching "Power and politics" today and one of Evans guest was a high ranking On.PC.MPP. Man this guy was smoking mad at this Frank guy for announcing his intention for the Speaker job! Apparantly the speaker is obligated to vote with the government to avoid confict or collapse or something along those lines. WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Boges Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 Apparantly the speaker is obligated to vote with the government to avoid confict or collapse or something along those lines. Heard Klees on the radio this morning and he says there is no rule that says the speaker has to vote with the government. Oh and I acknowledged those were Federal MP's in my post. Quote
capricorn Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 not much preventing someone from crossing the floor to the Liberals either. They could offer a sweet position and whammo! McGuinty cut his cabinet by 6 positions, from 28 to 22. He has a couple of long serving quality backbenchers who would be very upset if they were passed over for a cabinet post in order to lure someone from the other side. I don't see McGuinty risking a caucus fracture by doing this. A bi-lection is also a possibility obviously. Right. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. capricorn Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 This "Frank Klees" guy you mention is pretty much crossing the floor by announcing his intention for the speakers job! That's about it. I read 4 Liberals are also running for the Speaker's job. Right there that's 4 votes Klees won't get, leaving the Liberals with 49 votes to cast with 5 candidates in the running. This will be an interesting vote to watch. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers

capricorn Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 This just in. A chastened Progressive Conservative MPP Frank Klees is rethinking his bid for speaker of the Legislature one day after igniting a firestorm in Ontario’s minority parliament, the Star has learned. In an interview late Wednesday, Klees, who is under enormous pressure to withdraw for defying PC Leader Tim Hudak, said he would bow out unless he can gain support of 40 to 50 MPPs by noon Friday. With four of the 53 Liberal MPPs running for the prestigious post and most of the 37 Tory and 17 NDP members threatening to oppose him, that threshold is a tall order. “The last thing I want to do is take on the responsibility of speaker in the midst of a firestorm,” Klees, 60, who finished second to Hudak in the 2009 PC leadership contest, told the Star. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1076594--klees-ponders-dropping-out-of-speaker-s-race?bn=1 I wonder if he still has his sights on the leadership of the PC party. However the initial idea proposed in Boges comment was MPP's who have crossed the floor,I tried to acknoledge this point since I felt it was a good point that nobody followed up on,including Boges! Shwa Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 This just in. I wonder if he still has his sights on the leadership of the PC party. No doubt he and his supporters do. Besides, he is more representative of what the Ontario Progressive Party has become. Quote
Boges Posted October 27, 2011 Report Posted October 27, 2011 No doubt he and his supporters do. Besides, he is more representative of what the Ontario Progressive Party has become. I just heard he can't even get someone to second his nomination. It appears this is a non-story. No way he becomes speaker. As for the bi-election issues. That's not something anyone can count on because we have no idea where or when the first bi-election will happen. It could happen the other way and the Liberals may fall further behind their majority. Quote
