bush_cheney2004 Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 If the NW Passage isn't Canadian waters then the water between the Florida Keyes and Florida do not belong to the U.S Fine by me....territorial limits are recognized out to 12 miles. Farther for economic protections. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
olp1fan Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 If you really want those waters to be sovereign territory, be prepared to defend it. We are doing just that, we're building ships and subs again Quote
dre Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 Still, if people want the resources, they aren't going to use nukes. That means, a conventional war...and that means, for the next couple of decades, anyway, no one is going to challenge the US. Plus it would be stupid for an opposing power to take on the US when the US is doing such a good job of taking on ITSELF. Potential adversaries will likely just sit back and enjoy the show. Topaz Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 Name change here...April 2006, the north west passage is now the CANADIAN Internal Waters. Quote
GostHacked Posted October 22, 2011 Author Report Posted October 22, 2011 That's simply not true...Persia/Iran has been involved in numerous conflicts either as direct aggressor or instigator (e.g. Kurdish rebellions). Iran was first to attack Iraq's Osirak nuclear plant. Payback is a bitch! So when is the USA getting another payback? Nah...it's still pretty much the Northwest Passage. We'll wave as we drive by....have been since USS Nautilus in the 1950's. Edited October 22, 2011 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

ToadBrother Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 (edited) We are doing just that, we're building ships and subs again Better quadruple that order, add significant numbers to air capacity, put some more satellites up there, and some good submarines for good measure. Patrolling that body of water is going to mean competing against Russia. In other words, what you wrote is laughable. As others have pointed out, the Law of the Sea seriously restricts any nation's ability to lock of any trade route. I'll wager in other places you rail on endlessly about international law. Guest Derek L Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 Russia and Canada will be at war with each other before the end of the decade Putin has an image to uphold and he has been very serious about the arctic belonging to Russia, his legacy is at stake and Russians expect him to not back down Don't expect much help from the U.S, Canada and the U.S will have a falling out and relations will be cold I do expect Britian and Australia to assist Canada There will be other players involved as well like the Nordic countries who have a stake in the Arctic they might join forces with Russia because of their proximity to Russia I suppose many of you will think this is silly though eh? And I thought I was a cold war relic..... Quote

Patrolling that body of water is going to mean competing against Russia. Submarines would be nice, but, Russia is pretty far from most of Canada (There isn't much Russia in the extreme north. They really couldn't send an invasion force over. A few fighters, a few icebreakers....they probably won't be much of a match for a few US F-22s (and the idea that they wouldn't help us is laughable) or Canadian F-35s. The AOPS isn't designed to fight war, although it will probably outgun most things it will encounter. Satellites are in space and in the design stage, as are UAVs and new maritime patrol aircraft, around 2020. Edited October 23, 2011 by Smallc Quote
