At the time, IIRC, the western media were of the opinion that it was Chretin getting back at Black for unfavorable coverage in his papers.

The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.

Fat chance....Conrad represents convicted anglo bastards who think they are above the law. That kinda crap might fly in Canada, but down here you gots to do some time. I hope he dies in prison! ;)

Ha ha ha ha! Just typing out loud - You never fail to amuze and anguish me. At first I thought ...that it was someone else...I forgot that you are a black formal land formally a naval officer - were not the people that befriended you - assisted you - were loyal to you of old anglo stock? I have a grude against the old anglo elite also - but they are my adopted tribe...I grew up with them and even though they denied me opportunity and privledge - they are still family. I am loyal to my youngest brother also who hates and fears me - but he is my brother.

As for what might fly in Canada..the same moves in the states but crawls under the radar. What did Mr. Black do that was so odd...build an empire - employ thousands - create a share holder system - a common wealth - then like a well entilted old king he dipped into what was his AND through agreement the share holders...all he did was break a promise - perhaps a trust...BUT he did not bankrupt a nation as your heros have done.

Nope...the last vestiges of anglo stock and their elitist sense of entitlement was run out of the US Navy back in the 1970's when "Bruthas" rioted on aircraft carriers. Now that was fun!

Going bankrupt is not illegal....mail fraud and wire fraud, however, are very much so.

Look at it this way...many Canadians (or former Canadians...that's another long story)...come to America to seek their fortune (and lower taxes)...and do swell. Others run afoul of the law like Conrad Black, and have to accept that part of America too.

Just read the fine print at the border.

Economics trumps Virtue.

Regardless of the reason(s), Black made his own decision - no one "forced" him into doing or saying anything. He chose to do what he felt was most favorable to him, and now he wants to come back because that's what will now suit him best.

Normally I'd agree with you but I remember vividly the circumstances at that time. Pre-criminal charges Black and his newspaper chain were major thorns in the side of the Liberal government. I felt and still feel that Chretien's forcing that dilemna on Black was personal and vindictive. In other words vintage Chretien, along the lines of the "Shawinigan handshake". Basically he's a thug.

Unlike his opponent whom the Americans had the good sense to prosecute for criminal activity?

Incidentally, his wife Barabra Amiel has a newly-discovered persona which is outraged--outraged!--at the terrors of the US justice system. It chugged along famously until the injustice of His Lordship being incarcerated. Though I doubt her husband is suffering long-term prison sexual assaults, like those of the lower orders whom Amiel and Black have long despised. :)

You must mean Australia's referendum in 1999 that resulted in the retention of the Australian monarchy. That was, of course, the end result of 15 years of planning, studies, conventions, debates, and education, in the federal and all six state jurisdictions. Another dozen years later, and the lame republicans still haven't been able to formulate a plan and have lost the attention of the nation in the process. So, yes, it would likely be a decades long project for Canada, as well; assuming there ever was more than a half percent of the population that cared enough to even try.

I suspect a lot more might be interested if they had good reason to believe the process would conclude reasonably quickly.

If that was the case though I wonder how quickly you'd be hitting the binders and saying this needs way more time.

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,
a liberal, oh fanatical criminal

Assuming most of the members at Mapleleaf are of anglo stock - where is your loyality too your own? Canada shows more mercy and grace to a Muslim immigrant set on destroying our home than they do for the people that built our home. Conrad represents to a degree - our old anglo establishment - Once men like him are gone - YOU will fade...you need this old man home...or your privledge will desolve more rapidly that it would naturally.

My own what? I'm an Earthling and my loyalty is to my planet. Given the way my anglo stock is branching off this is a very natural evolution.

Perhaps we need Black to remind us of how loyalty to our own really doesn't mean that much in the scheme of grander things.
