I find this hard to believe, but can understand how erotica might have had a place within the early printing press. If porn was such a driver though, then why the Bible as the first printed book? From McLuhan's research in 'The Gutenberg Galaxy' the most popular early printed books were academic texts since back in the day those large volumes had to be copied by hand. Ironically, with the printing press, this would have freed up hands to be doing other stuff... I think liberalization took off with the printing press, but was it because of the naughty bits? Although, you go back far enough, it wasn't pornography to them (the ancients) it was religious devotion... Once the printing press became more common, shortly after Guttenberg, they would during the day print plato, aristoltle, augustine...to sell to the rich....and and night print Deep Throat...to sell to everyone... It was all those porn tapes, all those people who wanted to watch porn movies in the privacy of their own homes which helped VCRs take hold in the days when they were so expensive and there was so little out there for them. It was also the great commercialization break-through for the internet. Porn made a ton of money, and others figured, if porn could do it, maybe they could. Right now we have the book revolution. Amazon has admitted that it now sells more ebooks than regular books. And erotica is a huge part of that. Oh sure, the big names are out in front with the biggest sales, but behind them is a tidal wave of erotica, often being written and sold by people no one has ever heard of. No one who is actually a capable actor/actress/director or whatnot will have anything to do with it. Sex videos have no real acting, no writing or story to speak of, extremely poor uhm, choreography, if you know what I mean, and are generally uninspiring and unimaginative.
