M.Dancer Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Even King's and St Laurent's Liberal parties created Crown corporations and expanded social programmes. The 'business liberal' C. D. Howe was proudly responsible for public institutions and state-run industry. Were they ever all that libertarian of a party? As far as I can tell, the Liberal party of the past 20 years, especially today's Ignatieff-led party, is as 'fiscally conservative/socially liberal' as they've been in ages, going well back before the Pearson/Trudeau era. Maybe Dion was a bit of an exception. Liberal and libertarian are not synonymous. The early liberals were free traders. Evening Star Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) And Chretien's Liberals signed NAFTA. Ignatieff's policies are very pro-free trade afaict. Liberal and libertarian are not synonymous. Fair enough. I just gathered that that was mostly what Bill meant by 'the classical definition', based on his posts. Maybe I was wrong. PIK Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Seeing all the young voters were conditioned over the years through the policy of liberal democratic crapola...it is unlikely that these lefties who love the luxury of capitalism will ever stop vacilating between fine wine and the bread and water diet that seems to give them a feel good approach to everything - Toronto is for the most part now populated with young white adults raised by sell out rich hippies...and immigrants that if they do not vote liberal quietly believe that some how deportation awaits in the wings...YOU can't have it both ways..our captialist banking class love Canadian style socialism - it keeps the people enslaved and them rich...The high archy conservative rich buggers should just be happy with controling the money...and not worry about a political label "conservatism" - or their BRAND stamped on the asses of their submissive wards. Jason Kenney has been making gains with the immigrant population, most immigrants have con values ,but years of liberal fearmongering have kept them away but that is changing. You have immigrants that came here in the last 30 years and worked hard for what they have, and they to are pissed at the special treatment immigrants today get. Keep our 10 seats in quebec, and get the 4 seats in NFDL, and go hard in the 416 and 905. Topaz Posted January 12, 2011 Author Report Posted January 12, 2011 What I've heard from the media pundits is that Quebec is starting to support the NDP more, partly because Jack is from Montreal. If Gilles leaves the Bloc to go to provincial government, then I see the the Bloc done. If Harper stays with the same support, I think that the Libs can get a minority, IF the Lib supporters get out and vote. I think that may happen because the people are with out jobs, women don't like the Tories, students will support the Libs. I just think the Libs have a better chance this time . When the Tories use the word "coalition" the Libs should turn around and "progation". Quote

Not according to the last Ekos poll....Layton is not from Montreal, he is from Hudson. The NDP sit at 11.5% in quebec...and in Montreal where their only hope is, sit at a dismal 9.1% They will be very lucky if Muclair is re-elected.... PIK Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 LOL I guess I walked into that one. But now that harper just saved the seal hunt with a deal with china, that could mean alot of east coast votes. Immigrants are now looking at the cons, they to do not like seeing other immigrants get special treatment. And kenney has being doing a great job with the immigrant, as one liberal complained ,everytime I go to a cultural event kenney has already been there, this man spends every weekend visiting these groups. The world is totally impressed with harper with his steady hand on the keel. We canadians are sooo lucky the libs are not in power. Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.

Evening Star Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 most immigrants have con values ,but years of liberal fearmongering have kept them away but that is changing. Maybe...? I'd need to see some numbers. My parents came here in the 70s (which in itself was made easier, if not possible, by the Liberal governments of the time). They're not especially political: They do have somewhat conservative (but not Christian!) leanings on social issues but they are also quite left-wing by North American standards when it comes to economic and foreign policy. They mostly voted NDP in the 80s and 90s. I'm not entirely convinced that most immigrants have Conservative values when it comes to e.g. pro-US/pro-Israel foreign policy or even economic policy. Some of these things are probably changing with newer generations though... Quote

pinko Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I don't see the Harper led CPC gaining a majority under the current circumstances. Their support is eroding in B.C., Quebec, and the Maritimes and Ontario provides very limited opportunity for the growth required to bring the Haperites to a majority. I am looking forward to casting my vote and you can be assured it won't be for a conservative candidate. Quote
