Our garden produces enough to freeze, can and dry to last us until about May of the following year. Not only do we know where all that food comes from but our 'store' is only about 20 feet from our kitchen.

so when your food runs out in May what do you plane to eat until the next harvest in August/September...if you run out of food in May can we also assume eating everything you have nothing remaining to plant for the next crop?

If it was nuclear war or a comet impact or a super volcano, etc...nuclear war being the most probable by far...there wouldn't be any decent food production (if any) for YEARS as dust would block out the majority of the Sun.

'Threads' is still one of the creepiest movies about how quickly society would break down...

We have preserves and canned goods as well as fresh / stored roots vegetables. The preserves and canned goods lasts for years. I also begin harvesting fresh food beginning in March/April. So we are good for the whole yearly cycle.

Threads is a great movie, and if it don't make you feel angry at all about things, then yup, screwed.

It does not matter what really happens, the outcome is going to be like Threads, and we will be back in the dark ages for centuries, perhaps forever.

In November 1983, we came oh so close to having a Threads situation it makes you squirm.

We were all minutes away from being roasted by Russian H-Bombs. Very scary.

The full tale...

I think it's much less likely than a food shortage/famine/plague.

Or it will be some mad scientist in an underground facility who hit the wrong button. :D

Did you watch the documentary? We were literally all minutes from being turned to radioactive dust in 1983 (were you born yet?)...and it had already happened before (1962). Had it been up to the big chiefs of the Politburo and the Soviet automated (but flawed) early warning system, the planet would have been a smoking crater. Luckily for us, it was Soviet junior officers that saved the day.

Not to mention a simple food shortage or plague isn't going to kill all life on the planet. Two thousand + hydrogen bombs going-off would.

I'll have to watch it at home. Youtube is not blocked by the filter, but video.google.com is .. :(

I was born in 1971. I understood quite well what the impact of a nuclear strike would be. That is not lost on me even today. However the more countries that get nukes, the less likely I see that they are going to be used. And if they are used it won't be in the conventional manner with a conventional launch system.

Were the Russians notified of the war games? Because as far as I know, they let each other know when exercises are going on to prevent any mishap just like this.

Well, history shows how lethal certain viruses were. The Bubonic Plague for example seems to have been responsible for 3 different outbreaks in different parts of the world at different times. We are in more trouble from some type of virus. When this outbreak hit Europe in the 14th century it took about close to 30-60% of the population.

So for a nuke attack, we got to look at what is likely and what is most probable bases on some history. I think once that nuclear genie was let out of the bag, everyone on earth understood what it meant, and we understood the implications.

I won't completely write off a nuclear war as an end-game scenario, but I think it's low on the list compared to some of the other scenarios.

After this last night

Oooohhhh!!!

I vote for zombie apocalypse. You never know.....could be a super-virus outbreak. Looking at a lot of the "working joe" types in my neighborhood, it may already have started.

Yes...Walking Dead scores pretty high on the Zombie scale.

Manage to catch the first epp of that series tonight. Looks like it's going to be a great series. Also I am amazed how many good shows that Lennie James has been on so far. Now that Rubicon is essentially dead :(, I guess this will have to do.
