If Canada was struck with a similar catastrophe, you might be one of the first to scream where the aid is and why other countries are not chipping in to help. The relevance is that we gave money to a dictator who came to power in a coup to help combat terrorism within Pakistan. The west supported him for almost a decade. My question is; why? Why should we be giving Pakistan any money at all? For that matter, why are we giving them tens of millions a year in foreign aid? This is a country which has nuclear weapons it seems able to pay for. It's a country with something like 700,000 active duty military personnel. It's a country which is massively corrupt on every level, starting with the prime minister's office. It's a country whose intelligence services largely created the Taliban and continue to support them. A country with 700,000 military personnel needs our help to take care of flood victims? You make some valid points. On the other hand, do you just want to let the bastards die? The gov't is corrupt, and the civilians who are dying do have to take some responsibility for that, but i wouldn't punish them with withholding aid that will lead to death. What i find more interesting is that for every dollar we donate, the gov't will match it...WITH OUR OWN MONEY! Geez, how generous of them. But heck, i'd rather they spend it on this aid than on truly wasteful B.S. like the long-gun registry or all the G20/G8 bologna.
