Michael Hardner Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Transit Activist Steve Munro is raising the profile of TTC activism with his blog. The TTC is paying attention with initiatives that are: - clear - measured, with commitments and costs explicitly spelled out - easy to understand - easily accessible by the public - monitored by an independent third party This is just excellent. Thanks to Steve Munro for putting the TTC back in touch with the public. Now, let's just get him to tackle healthcare ! Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

nicky10013 Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 Subway Station Appearance Improvement Project I'm gload it's getting better but aside from the washrooms I've never felt that the subway system here was all that dirty to begin with. A lot of the complaints I hear are about things like mud, water, salt stains, all of which are due to inclement weather, which cleaning staff can't keep up with considering 2 million people ride it every day. Really, the only cleaner system I've rode is Washington, then again it was just built with gigantic amounts of federal cash. London, Berlin and Warsaw are all comparable. Paris and New York all quite a bit dirtier. Quote

jbg Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 no thats what taxes are for... No. Taxes were for giving you a proper education in the Canadian language. Remiel Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Just because a lot of different languages are spoken in Toronto does not necessarily mean that every language has to be given government accomodation in signage. If there were a large enough demographic for a particular language, that would be one thing, but it is probably not a good use of resources to try and include every language under the sun. That money would be better spent on hiring people who spoke those languages for more important services, such as 911. Quote

jbg Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 I would prefer signage to be in two languages; Canadian and English. Equal means equal! I can quite ably respect other languages without thinking that we should include them all everywhere. Over 100 languages are spoken in Toronto, and if everything on every bus had to be in all of them, no one would be able to understand what the signs say because the letters would have to be microscopic in order to fit everything. A sign you can only read from a foot away is a useless sign. Quote

Equal means equal! Indeed! In fact, we should refrain from being so rude as to speak English in public if anyone nearby might not understand it. All Canadians should be forced to learn every possible immigrant language, so that they can properly accommodate all minorities at all times. These forced language training sessions, should, of course, be paid for by "taxes", which are, after all, collected specifically for the purpose of servicing all the world's "minorities" (who of course outnumber us Canadians about two hundred to one). Man o' man Bonam, did someone take the sting out of the WASP? I think there is a little blue pill for that. But... providing signage in the language of the majority of clients makes sense, at least for the new people until they have acculturated, which they inevitably will. Making it easier for your clients to access your services - and spend their money - makes sense doesn't it? Quote
Michael Hardner Posted August 16, 2010 Author Report Posted August 16, 2010 It might make sense, or it might not. Maybe we can have a website where these types of changes are prioritized and scheduled. For now, at least, we have Steve Munro to focus on what is going on. M.Dancer Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 canada is a MULTILINGUAL, multicultural country... live with it bigot. Fair enough. Have signs in both languages and push for tax dollars to be spent teaching immigrants to speak and read on of them. As for signage to be in every language imaginable, it is neither cost effective or desirable. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us

Michael Hardner Posted August 16, 2010 Author Report Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) Try not to maybe give somewhat of an iffy opinion. One way or another. My point is that baseless "we should do this..." statements are a directionless way to talk about change. We are little but a mob unless somebody at least points us to a way that we can collect our thoughts and prioritize. When somebody says "this would be a good idea" - and clearly has no idea how these things happen - I want to go back to them and teach them. In this case, somebody saying "all languages should be in the TTC" needs to be asked why or why not, shown how they can express their opinion where it will be counted, and told about forums like: Steve Munro.ca Google not working for you? Not for the original poster, that's clear. Yes, because what the universe needs is yet another blog about the goings on in Toronto. Why would you care if you're not from Toronto ? If you are, then why wouldn't you ? Edited August 16, 2010 by Michael Hardner Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
