August1991 Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 My sympathies lie entirely with Toronto police when it comes to their performance during last weekend’s G20 summit. But it ends with lying to the public. National PostI have no sympathies for these cops. Correct me if I'm wrong but 20,000 policemen divided by $1 billion means $50,000 per cop. IOW, because of Harper and this summit, taxpayers across Canada paid off the mortgages of many Toronto policemen. Maybe it's a strange bank bail out. And where did the money come from? $1 billion divided by 30 million is about $30. This is not how I think a federal government in Canada should operate. Ordinary Canadians should not be paying $30 each so that each Toronto cop receives $50,000. Canada's federation should not be a forced lottery. ---- I fear that Stephen Harper cynically believes that he must imitate the federal Liberal Party to win and maintain power. This is not the Canada that I want, and if Harper persists in this, I believe that he will destroy Canada - just as the federal Liberal Party is now self-destructing. Quote

August1991 Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 So what is YOUR option,if not Mr.Harper? We cannot have a federal system based on stealing from many and funneling to a few.It can work for a while, but it cannot work for long. Harper is trying to imitate the past federal Liberals and this method of governance won't work in the modern world, for long. Federal Canada needs another approach. Quote

Bonam Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 ... You've really latched onto this topic, almost like charter.rights on native stuff or naomi on Israel. How many threads is that now? We get it, you don't like the $1 billion costs of the G8/G20. Quote

Ol' August is a serious fiscal conservative and this seems to be the proverbial straw that broke the camels back...I just don't know where he's going to go in this country to get the conservativism he craves if Mr.Harper ain't cuttin' the mustard... Bonam Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 I think it's a little deeper than that... Ol' August is a serious fiscal conservative and this seems to be the proverbial straw that broke the camels back...I just don't know where he's going to go in this country to get the conservaticism he craves if Mr.Harper ain't cuttin' the mustard... I suggested the WRAPers... I understand that and tend to share the same fiscally conservative viewpoint. I too would prefer if the summits had cost less. But the summits are over and done with, the billion spent, and there remains as always no more fiscally conservative option. Why start multiple threads on this topic now? I just really don't like posters that have a very specific agenda and endlessly post about that topic. Until now, August didn't fit into that category. Quote

If each police officer were simply paid $50,000 each to work for a weekend, I'd be similarly upset. The math I'm sure doesn't work out that way, however. While I'm sure they were paid well to come, a huge amount of the cost of security during the summit was logistical.
