I wonder how many people in jails are actually not a threat to others?

I think the reason why so many people are defined as criminals unnecessarily are just for the government employees and lawyers to take more from tax payers.

This will increase the cost to Canadian products and services which are already less competitive internationally. More jobs can be lost due to this reason, maybe more people will take tax dollars by taking a new created position as a government employee. And more people who are able to contribute to the economy will be taken away suddenly and be sent to jails to spend tax dollars.

Parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page says the Truth in Sentencing Act could raise total prison costs to $9.5 billion a year in 2015-2016 from $4.4 billion this year. It could also require the construction of as many as a dozen new prisons.

Are Canadians walking the streets in fear? Of course not. Crime is falling. Even if it were rising, an expenditure of billions annually to take away the near-automatic two-for-one credit for time served before trial wouldn’t make sense. The principle is sound (the routine double credit was too rich a bonus), but any good idea needs to be weighed against other good ideas, and the best idea, at this time, is not to spend new money unless that expenditure is vital. Even in a booming economy, though, such a massive jail expansion would be the wrong way to go. Truth in Sentencing needs to be accompanied by Truth in Budgeting.

This bill will probably be cheap in comparison to Harper's "jail all the hippies and teenagers" bill. C-10 I believe its called? Good thing we have the government to protect us from people who grow plants, or have dried plants in their possession. If we don't put them in jail they might bake some brownies and watch Pink Floyd's "The Wall".

I do have to take issue with the argument that "because crime is falling nothing needs to be done", for a number of reasons:

- Crime is falling in a lot of countries, and its likely due to demographics (younger people tend to cause more crime, and as the population ages there are more seniors who are less likely to rob banks, mug little old ladies, and steal cars.) However, that doesn't necessarily mean that having 'fear' over crime is unreasonable

- Even if crime is decreasing, where is it written that that is enough? Ideally the crime rate should be 0, but I do recognize that as an impossibility. Are the crime rates decreasing fast enough? (Did you know that Canada has a higher overall crime rate than the U.S., when dealing with 'victim oriented' crime? Should we be proud of that?)

Law and Order is one of the core functions of government. I'd much rather see them spend money on that than on, for example, business or cultural subsidies. If someone deserves to be in jail, then they deserve to be in jail, and if we say "we can't afford to punish criminals" then the government has failed. (And if financial concerns are an issue, then find other ways to save money; for example, change the drug laws regarding possession.)

If lower incarceration rates, with lower prison costs associates with reduction in crime (add stringent gun control to the mix), then what do we get for 10 billion, dozen more prizons, compromised gun control and a ton of tough talk? Your guess.

Your numbers are absolutely idiotic. Where did you get this crap? What $4.4 billion this year?! This year spending on C-25 is only $90 million. This is in the recently approved budget.
