Yep the government bought it up when it was failing, turned it into a successful company and then the Conservatives sold it off. Sounds familiar.

Yeah...

the 407 in Ontario....

I think private toll roads are a great idea. Especially when they wouldn't be built otherwise.

The government built it, though. They sold it off, and considering the 407 doesn't have any competition, jacked up the rates 10 fold. Now, no one can turf the guys who jacked up the rates because they're not elected. Now, no one drives on it because they don't want to pay the horrible rates and traffic is as bad as ever. Some solution.

I would relish a private toll road into NYC. My time is worth more than I save by driving on a "free" road for 50 kms at 40 km an hour.

For those who can afford it, sure. However, not a lot of people are willing to take on that much. Furthermore, what's the purpose of building a new highway if it doesn't reduce traffic elsewhere?

Yogi Berra once said about a restaurant "Nobody goes there anymore 'cause it's too crowded".

If nobody drives on it, I guess the private company will have to lower their rates - or go out of business.

Well it also creates a speedy way to get from Point A to Point B.
