Smallc Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Actually, it's not a tax anymore. EI is decided by a board, which will take over after the rates are unfrozen. Quote
nicky10013 Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 Actually, it's not a tax anymore. EI is decided by a board, which will take over after the rates are unfrozen. In the end it's a government program paid by taxpayers. Sounds like a tax hike to me. Despite what semantics conservatives use, we're still paying more to the government. On the flip side, I don't mind if they've got to raise taxes. If a party honestly came to the public saying, we've got horrible problems and we may need to raise the GST back up to 7% then that would be understandable and I'd have respect for any party who actually told the truth. However, for this jerk to be falsely accusing the Liberals of trying to raise taxes and then propose this garbage is the worst kind of arrogance and a disdain for the intellect of voters shown again and again by this PM. Smallc Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 It's not a tax anymore. It doesn't go into government revenues and it's rate is no longer set by the government. Quote

So would I, but there's two problems. A ) this increase in the EI rate won't help government revenue at all, and B ) anyone who says they'll raise taxes is knee jerk rejected. We have all of these things that need paying for (not the least of which are several large military projects, which conservatives are supposed to love) and we don't have the money to do it anymore. We need to do something. Quote
Bryan Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 EI is a tax. Plain and simple. False. It's insurance, separately accounted from general revenues. If your house or car insurance goes up, that's not a tax increase. If the cost of operating EI increases, so do the premiums, just like any other insurance. Quote
Smallc Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 False. It's insurance, separately accounted from general revenues. That's correct. It was a tax until a couple of years ago. I actually wish it had remained a tax, but as of now it isn't. Quote

Smallc Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Sure, that'd be an awesome way to get rid of the deficit. Quote

An insurance that you cannot opt out of, which by default means it's a tax. My house and car insurance are optional in that I don't have to own a house or car. They are expenses added on top of owning something and they are their to insure my property and myself against liability. EI may provide insurance, but the funding of it is tax. I have no choice in the matter. It provides very little to no benefit to probably a majority of the population and there are a lot of people, myself included, that would prefer not to pay into it, or be eligible for it, if I had the choice. It's a tax. Quote "A man is no more entitled to an opinion for which he cannot account than he is for a pint of beer for which he cannot pay" - Anonymous

Moonbox Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 (edited) Well, you don't technically have to have a job. In which case I really don't pay any taxes at all do I? I net out earning money from the government, don't I? I'm essentially a social leech and the government is paying me. House and car insurance are different in that there are third party interests at stake that require you to be insured. I need house and fire insurance as a term for getting a mortgage. I need car insurance in case I run someone over with my car. I need to pay EI so....that a bunch of people can work for the summer and then collect EI in the fall and winter...great. punked Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Sure, that'd be an awesome way to get rid of the deficit. If the debt has to be subsidized by EI then EI is a tax isn't it. Quote
Smallc Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Except that EI doesn't go into general revenue anymore. Quote
Topaz Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Except that EI doesn't go into general revenue anymore. I was watching Finley in the committee hearings and I know the Tories have said that they have setup a EI Fund of 2Bil. but she said that fund isn't going to happen until later in 2010 or 2011. I thought they already had changed it over but they haven't. Quote

It's a tax. It's not a tax, you do have a choice. Opt out of employment, go into business for yourself. Self-employed still pay tax, but not EI. Lots of contract employees don't pay into EI either. Good, Now the Conservatives can return the 50 Billion plus interest stolen to this board and everything wil be kosher. Smallc Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Except that in the past it was a tax and could be spent as the government saw fit. We shouldn't bankrupt the country so we can have a bunch of money sitting in EI for nothing. Quote
