kimmy Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 (edited) Two things I will say the English one the camera is bouncing all around. Why did they do this? I can't even watch it with out being distracted. They wanted to show everybody that they found a real forest? Hey, on the bright side, at least it's not an out-of-focus cell-phone video. I have said for some time that I, Kimberly Johnson, am the voter that the Liberals need to win over to return to government. They need to win voters who aren't overly enchanted with Harper, but have refused to support the Liberals due to various factors (ad-scam, Stephane Dion, etc.) This ad (and I've only watched the English one because my French is abysmal) doesn't do much to help them on that front, but it doesn't hurt them either. They seem to be trying to create an image that the middle-of-the-road Canadian will find comfortable and relateable. Michael Ignatieff steps forward and declares himself to be in favor of trade, competitiveness, innovation, and business. I think the large majority of Canadians are ok with all of this. (Compare Stephane Dion who stepped forward and spoke of shifts and change and alarm and impending crisis... all of which made people uncomfortable.) This isn't a campaign or a platform, this is a guy who is trying to approach the typical voter in a way they'll find comfortable. (edit to add: ok, even with my French being abysmal, those were straightforward enough.) -k Edited September 6, 2009 by kimmy Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
capricorn Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 I watched all three videos. My impressions. Ignatieff does a pretty good imitation of Harper at his blandest. He appeared to keep his usual facial contortions in check. In the English "forest" ad, the constant camera movement is annoying and distracting. I keep thinking a bear will suddenly appear from behind a tree. In the French ad, the credit at the end is different from the English ad. The English has a background half red, half white with the Liberal logo while the French ad background is totally white with the Liberal logo. I have a theory about this. In Quebec, the federal Liberals are sometimes referred to as "les rouges" ("the reds"), thus the absence of the colour red in the background. Why remind Quebecers that "les rouges" may once again be in government. The French ad has a different slogan than the English ad. In French it is "nous méritons mieux" (we deserve better) while the English ad says "we can do better". I took it as a direct message to Quebecers that they deserve and should have a bigger voice in the affairs/programs of the federal goverment and the Liberals can deliver. The choice of blue for Ignatieff's shirt is interesting. Blue, a colour associated with the Conservative Party. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." jdobbin Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 especially since his entire campaign will be based on "negative comparative suggestions"... essentially trash talking the other side without showing why you,re any better. Is that what you found here. Most of the critics have said that it is a lot more positive than the hyper negative ads the Tories run. However, to Tories those aren't negative. They are truth ads. The problem with that is much of the electorate knows negative ad campaigns when they see them. Who knows? It might work. Go crazy with it. Quote
Shady Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 I found the ad a little cheesy. "I'm Michael Ignatieff, and I'm sitting out in this forest. And I think Canada is really good." Vote Liberal. Quote
Smallc Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Well, in fairness, I remember similar ads from a different leader last election. Quote

The comparison to sweater-vest is a good one. The English ad is just there to present Ignatieff to us in a manner that we'll find comfortable and reassuring. I mean, he's here talking about succeeding at innovation and competitiveness and international trade... who wouldn't like that? (well, NDPers and Greenies, I suppose.) It sends two important messages. The first important message is, "Hi! I'm not here to do anything radical. I'm pro-market, pro-trade, pro-business. I'm interested in the traditional kinds of things that have made Canada a prosperous nation." The second important message it sends is, "Hi! I'm not Stephane Dion." -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Bryan Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I've read that the Liberals have said they spent $2 million dollars on these ads. They're fairly low budget ads, how much did the ad agency pocket? Would that be a Quebec ad agency by chance? And for $2 million, you'd think they could at least afford a tripod. Who was director, Dr. Tongue? Is that Algonquin Park on the Green Screen behind him? For that budget, why didn't they film it on location? Last week he was going on about how bad our unemployment was, now he's talking about send jobs to India and China. Why are they using the flag of Monaco at the end? Quote
waldo Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 gee, surprising you didn't care for the ads/message... although nice to see your fiscal concerns for the Liberal party expressed. clearly, to a Conservative, "reaching out to India and China" automatically invokes suggestion of the Conservative wet dream to outsource jobs - rather than investment opportunities associated with a more Liberal "worldview". yes - Liberals can do better... better than the Harper monkey-wrench gang! Argus Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Is that what you found here. Most of the critics have said that it is a lot more positive than the hyper negative ads the Tories run. Not the ones I've read. In fact, the words I've seen include "bland" and "sweater vest", comparing Ignatieff's English ad to the sweater vest ones from Harper early last campaign. The french ads, on the other hand, were entirely negative. Or, "Hyper negative" if you prefer. I don't know what it is with you lefties that you have to add these silly terms to perfectly ordinary words. Do you really think they help convince people? The problem with that is much of the electorate knows negative ad campaigns when they see them. Indeed, which is why everyone I've seen in every media describes Ignatieff's ads as negative, esp the French ones. Still waiting for any worthwhile ideas, you guys might have, btw. One of the columnists in the Post pointed out the contradiction between "taking on the world" and "reach out" to India and China, pointing out that India and China are our largest source of immigrants and have been for a decade. In reality, Ignatieff is "reaching out" to immigrants.
