Topaz Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 It looks like we, cable or satellite users, are going to be hit with a increase that cable and satellite companies were hit with from the Feds. http://www.thestar.com/business/article/679734 Quote
Bonam Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 People still use cable/satellite TV? I can't remember the last time I watched something that wasn't on the internet, must have been several years ago certainly. Save a ton of money, watch what you want when you want, just way better all around. Quote

And even then, Bell is increasing its rates overall which will force ISPs uding Bell lines to up their rates as well. I'll try to find the article. Quote
Topaz Posted August 13, 2009 Author Report Posted August 13, 2009 Guess what? The cable companies are getting an ear full of what consumers think of the increase and I think if they are showing profits, they shouldn't pass on the increase to their customers. http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/canada/200...443501-sun.html Quote

OddSox Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 I'm not sure what people expected - if costs go up, then prices go up. Pretty simple - works pretty much the same way as most taxes. If you don't like it, don't buy cable television - I don't. Quote
Smallc Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 For satellite users...do you know how much money it costs to put a satellite in space? It is isn't cheap. Quote

bush_cheney2004 Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 OK, but they are still making huge profits. No they aren't....data services margins are good, but purchased programming costs are rising faster than revenues from subscriptions. Conversion to HD requires more hardware upgrades and cost of sales. Time Warner Cable (TWC) lost almost $22 per share last quarter. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Conversion to HD requires more hardware upgrades and cost of sales.Time Warner Cable (TWC) lost almost $22 per share last quarter. This is a Canadian web site and we're talking about Canadian issues. Canadians have good reason to be skeptical. Canada's cable and satellite industry is in robust good health. Its profits exceeded $2 billion last year (on revenues of more than $10 billion). Friends of Canadian television Myself, I think the CRTC must be totally out to lunch if they didn't think this new tax or whatever they're calling it was going to be immediately passed along to consumers. Canada's cable and satellite providers are in exactly the same boat as cell phone providers. They're in a government protected semi-monopoly position and are free to screw over anyone who wants the service pretty much every way they can imagine. And they can imagine a lot. Smallc Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 I still wonder about the definition of Monopoly that some people are using. Quote

Profit is good....satellite has competitive packages and prices...stop being so damn cheap. Ha ha - what about the Canadians that now control the fledgling radio satallite buisness? Wait till our boys follow your rule of supply and demand and have you pay through the nose to listen to old geezer music out of the 60s.. What we should be addressing is the freedom of speech issue..the addiction that most young people have to constant and relentless cell phone communication - Instead of prices going down - they have sky rocketed - My youngest runs up a bill of about 300 a month - he has a part time job and ALL his money goes to the jerks that will not allow him to speak unless he has paid this hefty tribute to the goons. Things have changed - people used to communicate solely by mouth face to face - then the telephone - that was manageable- NOW - they speak electronically with personal devices that are akin to a prostetic - and they are addicted to electronic speech...time to reform this thing and get it up to speed - no human being should pay 300 dollars a month to speak..what's next - gag orders on those that don't pay the bill? Topaz Posted August 18, 2009 Author Report Posted August 18, 2009 I was talking to Star-Choice, now called Shaw, in Alberta, and she told me our subscription will go up about 3-4 $$ a month, because they are paying so consummers can have their local stations. Their pricing has gone up since we join in 2002 for different packages, but again anyone in business that not making a profit wouldn't be in business. Quote
GostHacked Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 I got a letter from Rogers in the mail telling me that i am going to be charged an extra 1.5% for an FDIC fee/charge. Apparently this is used to create better programming on TV .... We can just drop over half of the specialty channels and .. hell half of all the channels. Because there is no reason I need 10 channels that play the Simpsons at the same damn time. If you want to create better programming, do so without fleecing everyone to pay for it. It's crap and we are paying for it, to get better crap we need to pay a little more. Thinking of cutting off my TV again. Give me the ability to choose the channels I want and only see the ones I want. Quote

Oleg Bach Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 I get free cable - and I don't know why - don't ask - don't tell.. There is a guy that is one of our big buisness lawyers - I think they call him an investment banker - he just aquired a satallite - as a toy..when he was a kid - he wanted his own lake - then his own law firm - then his own bank - then his own country - and now he has the grandest of toys - a satalite - with a price tag of 4 billion bucks - I wonder what else he's going to want?
