The original reported outbreak of Swine Flu suggested that over a hundred people had died in Mexico and thousands were infected - and it was felt that it was just the tip of the iceberg. This from April 26:

Mexico has had the highest number of swine flu cases since April 13. There have been 103 deaths believed to be from the virus. In total, more than 1,600 people have become ill.

Key developments on swine flu outbreaks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization and government officials:

Deaths: 16 confirmed in Mexico and one confirmed in U.S., a toddler from Mexico who died in Texas.

Confirmed sickened worldwide, 653: 397 in Mexico; 161 in U.S.; 51 in Canada; 13 in both Spain and Britain; four each in Germany and New Zealand; two each in Israel and France; one each in Switzerland, Austria, South Korea, China, Denmark and the Netherlands.

A Mexican tourist visiting Hong Kong becomes Asia's first confirmed case. About 300 people were quarantined at a hotel where the tourists stayed.

Continental Airlines Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc. said they will reduce service to Mexico. JetBlue Airways Corp. cancelled about a dozen flights over the next month to Cancun because they weren't full enough.

CDC says virus lacks the traits that made the 1918 pandemic strain so deadly.

What happened to the hundreds of dead and the thousands of stricken? Well, they probably came down with the common flu - which every year, causes the deaths of 2500 people in Canada, 7000 in Mexico and 20,000 in the US - that's 7 a day in Canada, 15 a day in Mexico and over 50 a day in the US....and over 1000 everey day throughout the world. What we seem to have here is a case of the sniffles.

But even if these numbers stand up, they, too, should be seen in context. All influenza is potentially deadly. In a normal year, between 6,500 and 7,500 Mexicans die from pneumonia-like diseases. According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the flu kills up to 2,500 Canadians and about 36,000 Americans annually. Worldwide, the number of deaths attributed to the flu each year is between 250,000 and 500,000.

Let disease clear Mexico of corruption. We don't need that sort of natural cleansing quiet yet. As for the WHO ....the spokes person for this group sounds like a god damned communist who aspires to "we are all one" f them - I for one are not part of their global culture - socially or biologically....between the UN and WHO - makes me feel like some possible creepy Orwellian love fest is about to take place ....smells rotten.

From what I recall, the news reports quoted experts from Canada and the U.S. who said not to panic and that numbers were fluid. Most said that Mexico lacked the resources to properly confirm if people who had died really had the virus in question. We are now seeing numbers from Mexico that more accurately reflect infection rate and deaths thus far.

The scientists were right all along about not panicking. The overreaction came from those who were not listening to what they were saying.

I knew someone would take the bait........ of course not...provocative might be my word of the day. Besides the rich in Mexico are seperate from the poor most likely to suffer disease..and the real culprits will never see the vengence of natural law in the form of pestilence. Okay - will try to be more open about what I really think, feel and know...I guess I do pander...a bit to please. Not to sound like a conspiracy nut but correct me if I am wrong...Is this new flu..one part pig - one part human and one part bird? If so tell me how nature could have accomplished such a miracle so rapidly?

Back in the late 60s you guys would smash viles of nasty germs in the New York subway system and then monitor how fast disease spread though the population... that was a long time ago - I guess they have come a long way since then...I have a brother who is immune to everything and at the same time is a walking cess pool of disease... maybe I could talk him into selling a pint or two of his blood..real cheap...so waddayah think there BC?

That's right...also use to spray cities with cadmium to monitor airborne dispersal patterns. I seem to recall this same kind of panic and intrigue when it was Canada's turn in the barrel with SARS. Coronaviruses need love too!

BC....you are a jaded realist...most people are of the mind that says "they would never do that"...they underestimate human goodness - and worse - the underestimate human evil and the fridged hearts that do exist - that look upon the population as bugs. AND the worst part of SARS was the fact that I saw a couple of cases where the elderly were forced to die along and relatives were not allowed to rescue their aged from hospitals..nor be with them at the time of death...you have to keep an eye on the medical profession - they can be very shallow and henchmen like when it comes to so-called medical emergencies. They act like robots and really like being in patronizing postions of power a little to much...so will the sky every be blue again or with the powers that be continue to put aluminum powder in the air to reflect like up wards - so they can continue doing what they habitually do ...kind of like putting a bandage on a gaping wound because global warming is an economic problem for a few - instead of backing off they attempt to control the weather - and they are not very Jesus like...

I don't recall all the sordid details...just that it wasn't Ontariariario's finest hour. Then we find out that Canada didn't even have a national infectious disease control organization.....I guess the provinces would just fight it out like equlaization payments.
