August1991 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) Canada: Total sales were down 15 per cent nationally last month compared with March 2008, according to a tally released Wednesday by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. CPUS: All major carmakers reported steep declines compared with a year ago, with General Motors down 45 per cent, Ford 41 per cent, and Toyota and Chrysler each down 39 per cent.Total sales dropped to an annual rate of 9.9m units from 15.1m in March 2008... FT---- There are three points to make: 1. We in Canada are possibly doing better than Americans. 2. We in Canada are possibly a trailing indicator of American events. (Look to California and you can see the future.) 3. Americans are eternal optimists. Even when sales are down 45% and the company is on the verge of bankruptcy, some American will find a way to spin this decline: Sales of new cars and trucks in March continued to be dismal, but there was a silver lining in the 36.8% drop in sales compared to the same month a year ago:The typical seasonal increase in sales between February and March was the strongest it’s been in three years. I don't even know if the stats include Hummers, motorcycles or trucks. However the numbers are tabulated, it seems clear that Canada's sales are higher (have fallen less) than US sales. Quote

Canada has a slower fleet turnover rate, as Ford Canada reported on Monday. There is even a modest "scrappage" credit to encourage more turnover. I take this to mean that Canadian sales are less volatile even in the best of times. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

There is.....current sales volume would mean nearly a 25 year fleet turnover rate, depending on platform and market segment. Annual sales will return to some level well above 9 million units, but probably not return to 16 million. Split the difference.....12.5 million. Hell, I'm in the market for a new car right now...incentives are good....as is the reason for optimism. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Draw whatever conclusion you want from this fact but please don't pretend that this is good for the US aut (vehicle) market. True, auto inventories make it a buyers market - but maybe the deals will get better if you wait a month or two. Moreover, I'm inclined to believe that some Canadian buyers are behind the curve. Wilber Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Hell, I'm in the market for a new car right now...incentives are good....as is the reason for optimism. Still looking at the 370Z? Great looking car styled by a young guy from Surrey BC working for Nissan in San Diego I understand. Apparently a Z guy since a toddler, his dad having one of the first 240Z's. Hard not to right now, the incentives are amazing. Was quite taken by the Saab 9-3 Combi at the auto show the other day and the deals they are offering are fantastic but I'm a little leery of Saab's future even though they are still a part of GM. Fuel mileage isn't quite what I would like and the nearest dealer is 50 miles away. Too bad. Will probably go with another oil burner even though the deals aren't as good. Audi has an A3 diesel coming out in a few months. Maybe have a look at that if the premium over the VW isn't too high and it is available with quattro, might lean that way. Once the economy recovers fuel prices will likely go through the roof again as hardly anyone is drilling or exploring these days. Anyone buying a gas guzzler because of todays low fuel prices is taking a big risk IMO. What did you buy MD? Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC

Then he did a fine job, and fixed the unibody flex problem that required that awful space wasting brace in the rear hatch area. Now it has a semi usable deck, just like my old 240 Z's (1971 and 1972). Now you really know why I don't care about the GT-R. .... I wanted to see a Prius wagon this year, but it probably won't show up until at least 2011, but they did have the 3rd Gen Prius on display at 51 MPG. I liked the new Hyundai Elantra Touring hatchback as well for a grocery getter and utility vehicle. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Not much city driving that's why I will likely stick with diesel. I like the Elantra Touring as well, much better looking than the sedan. I'm partial to hatches and wagons anyway. I totaled my '71 240Z into a ravine cinder block retaining wall near Baudette, MN...not far from the Canadian border (pilot error). I walked away with only a head wound from my unrestrained Escort radar detector! Sold my replacement Z because it was not compatible with infant car seats or associated "lifestyle". But now is a good time for a mid-life upgrade to a 370Z.....and I would carefully drive it past that wall this time. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
bush_cheney2004 Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 (edited) Mazda 5. Do all those commuter seats come out for lots of cargo space? Or do they just fold down / collapse into the floor? I bring a tape measure to the shows and dealers because they don't publish the width of the liftgate opening. Edited April 3, 2009 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
