Dion's supposed strengths in Intergovernmental Affairs and Environment were not enough to land him a critic's role in Iggy's shadow cabinet. Iggy takes over Intergovernmental Affairs and David McGuinty retains Environment.

Another embarrassment for the Prime Minister that never was.

When Ignatieff becomes Prime Minister, either by leading a coalition or defeating Harper in the next election, I wonder what position Harper will occupy in the shadow cabinet of the Official Opposition. He certainly won't be leader. Finance? Energy?

Or maybe he'll return to the National Citizens' Coalition as he did after his falling out with Preston Manning.

Then again, he could rejoin the Northern Foundation if it still exists:

Which members are west of Ontario?

Neville, Martin, Bagnell and Dhaliwal (with people like Goodale, Dosanjh and Fry not in the shadow cabinet. That's some serious talent to keep on the bench.)

Thanks...

I was really surprised to not see Goodale on the list with so few Liberals elected between Ontario and the Rockies. He must be thinking that he's not going to run next time.

Shunning Trudeau shows how they are moving towards the center.

A lot of things could be read into that, particularly since so many very solid hands aren't in that lineup- like they've been pointedly placed in reserve. It looks a bit like letting the pups get their feet wet to learn a little something so they are worth having in the real dogfight- building the party for the longer term. Fading those guys into the background, where they are still very valuable, doesn't mean they are ready for retirement, or even that they wouldn't be assigned a cabinet post when the time comes.

(I sure wouldn't blame Goodale if he did retire though. He's put in yeomans duty-- has to be awfully close to being the most experienced in the house, and doesn't want the leadership.)

Trudeau remains sitting, warming the bench...

As this nobody rookie MP should be at this time. He has almost zero life experience and needs to see how to play the game with the big boys. He may more one day but has never done anything to date except write a bio book about Castro and how great socialism is. Other than that, zilch.

That's interesting because it's not the first time I heard that 'Northern Foundation' reference. I sort of dismissed it at the time thinking it was just part of that group he had spoke to when he called Canada a 'Northern European Welfare state in the worst sense of the word', and spoke of women's rights as something that would 'horrify' them.

There was another kind of wierd thing I read at the time but just made a joke of it, because it sounded rather silly, but it involved Conrad Black. This was around the same time as Harper was a guest of Connie's at that secretive international conference that brought demonstrations here in Canada. (Harper told reporters they were discussing 'jelly beans'). However, when he went with Conrad Black he wasn't PM. Not long after Peter MacKay's $500,000.00 debt was repaid, so I always assumed it was Black who paid it.

Did you ever hear of the all male group 'Promise Keepers' that Conservative MP David Sweet started in Canada? It's based in the U.S. and the founder tells it's members that only men are the true disciples of Christ and that they can't just ask to be head of the household, but must take it. What's that about?

Nothing surprises me anymore.

I think Goodale will be playing a different role. I heard something a while back. Word is that Dion did not want to be in the shadow cabinet. He prefers to keep a low profile. He took an awful bashing at the hands of the Conservatives, so I can't blame him.

As to Harper's position in the shadow cabinet. I don't think he'll cast a shadow anywhere if he's defeated. He's learning to say "would you like fries with that?"

Justin is doing a lot of work behind the scenes to bring in young voters. He has quite a following. I think his services there will be more important for the Party in the long term. He's young and is being groomed for other things.

He has a lot of ass kissers, people who thin he is his father. I hope not for the sake of Canada. This nobody rookie MP has done nothing yet.

Goodale is not in the opposition shadow cabinet because he is the Opposition House Leader, which isn't officially a critic. I'm glad John McCallum is Finance Minister-in-waiting, he sure is a breath of fresh air as opposed to Flaherty. However, I am surprised that some rising stars in the Liberals weren't given bigger roles. Navdeep Bains has been left out and even though he's like 31, he has more than four years of Parliamentarian experience. He could help the party since he's a minority and is popular in Peel Region. I guess they are already too many Toronto-area members in key roles.

And he only improves over time:

Okay, but that pic is not his fault. He was in an asian country and was playing along w the host by wearing that outfit.

But his fault lies with rule #12 on the fashion scene, never stand beside an asian, especially a skinny on, double special if you are portly.:)

Exactly. He's not his farther, just as Mr. Bush isn't his father.

Politicians should be elected on their merits not who they're related too. We don't need our own little Canadian version of GWB .
