Group wants to put atheist ads on Toronto transit buses

Mississauga Transit has turned down ads from religious groups in the past so it would lead to believe that they will continue to do the same. The TTC has only started allowing ads in recent years as their former boss wouldn't allow them for decades. I don't think that the TTC should allow the atheist ads as theirs no place for it in T.O. That being said, whatever people like me dislike is exactly what T.O tends to do with NDP Mayor Miller at the helm.

And why is there no place for the view ppoint of atheists in T.O.? Not that I agree with it, obviously, but they to have freedom of expression.

Of course there's a place. Two even counting both the Unitarian and United Churches...

I have seen some too. Even, a few years back, from the Cathollic Church. They pay for the space, they get the space.

So you say. Until I see some credible proof outside of a posters word, the jury is still out. I don't take transit anymore unless I'm going to a concert or a game so I don't really care too much. If they id do this then the Atheists should be allowed to do the same being given equal space to the religious groups, no more, no less, equal.

I take the TTC all the time. Ads for churches come and go but they are there.

I'm not talking ads for the homeless and such but you've seen outright evangelizing ads? Hrmm, well what's fair is fair.

Yes, outright evangelizing ads. Ican't remember the name of the consortium that places them, but there is usually a few lines of scripture and a pithy message then adresses of churches near TTC stops.

Indeed. What's fair is fair. I have seen ads inviting Catholics to go back to the Church. Sounds like a form of evangelisation to me.

BTW, There is a difference between a group CHOOSING not to place ads on the TTC and a group not being allowed to do so. Unless you can prove that the TTC refuses to take ads from Church groups, there is no basis tothe "if we don't do it, they should not be allowed to do it" argument..

Well go ahead then. If Atheists want to spread that message they can if the TTC allows it. I've decided that socialists are miserable people constantly worrying about what everyone else is doing and are constantly attacking everything. It makes me wonder if these people are ever happy, it really does as everything offends them. Maybe that's why they're always wearing army pants and tie-dyed T's getting stoned on Queen W. They're miserable. I'd hate to see how hyper they'd be if they weren't stoned around the clock.

Interesting, all that could be also be said about you.

So, "socialists" (better described as anyone who do not share your prejudice and bigotry) are stoned around the clock?

Wait, I'm confused. Do atheists get stoned every day, too, or is it just socialists? Are they miserable while they are stoned? Where can I get my army pants and tie dyed T shirt?

I don't know if you can be a stoner and an atheist at the same time...the few times in my life when I've questioned my atheism have all been brought on by drug use. Let me tell you what, you can't do a bunch of peyote and not at least wonder about spirituality. ;)

Well, now I have a weekend project! If I find out where to get some of it, I'll let you know if I'm still an atheist on Monday!

"There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

What are they implying with the "Now stop worrying and enjoy your life"? Sounds like an insult to religious people to me. I don't think insulting people should be allowed on public transit.

If people are offended by religious advertisements on buses, then maybe the government funded buses should not allow any ads that promote any religion. That maybe what the point of this group making this mocking advertisement.

I still think that a religious\non-religious group should be able to advertise to raise funds for charitable work.

By that logic, then statements like "Jesus will save you". or "Jesus will forgive your sins". are both insulting to me as an atheist. I neither need saving nor do I have sins, implying that I do is insulting - just like implying that religious people are worried (about the afterlife, perhaps) is insulting to you.

By the way, here is the group who always has ads on the TTC: http://www.busstopbiblestudies.com/

I believe the difference would be this: to imply that atheists need saving is to say that 'provided Christianity is correct, atheists need saving'. This is quite true. However to imply that 'provided atheism is true, Christians do not enjoy life' changes nothing, it is still possibly incorrect.

On the other hand, I for one have no problem with people being insulted on buses. Opposition is frankly the best thing for the church.

Wasn't it Voltaire who said something along the lines of, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"? People have a natural right to have any opinion they want and to say anything they want. That doesn't make their opinion necessarily right or correct. But, if Christians do not choose to protect the rights of the atheists to post their signs on these buses, then there is nothing stopping someone else from stomping on the Christians' rights either.

Eh, if nothing else you might become an existential agnostic (which is a really snooty way of saying "I don't know WHAT the hell is going on")

;)

I can understand what they mean because I grew up held hostage by three different types of fundamentalist religion before I was old enough to be able to leave home. I am convinced that most people who claim to believe in in the all-knowing, all-powerful god, do not make it a central feature of their daily lives, otherwise every thought can fill you with anxiety, wondering what the creator thinks of your thoughts and every actions.

But since most people won't get the meaning, and can't connect God with worry and an impediment to enjoying life, it's not a productive strategy to advance humanism or secularism, since it will generate a hostile emotional reaction for nothing.

Not really, it's more like... NOBODY knows what the hell is going on..

There is weak agnosticism and apathetic agnosticism (I don't care or I am not sure) and there is strong agnosticism ( it is impossible to know ). See Ingersoll and Betrand Russell.

To me, existentialism is a given. Free choice is extremely apparent in this world... I have not seen any good arguments supporting the idea that god is able to intervene in this world. Everything is always your choice - the bible does not become an authority in your life until you allow it to be one.
