madmax
Danny williams has pulled the right to a company that is trying to pull up stakes in NFLD. "This piece of legislation is simply about trees and water, the most basic of our natural resources," Williams said in the house of assembly. "Natural resources that rightfully belong to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador." Williams said his government is making this move because of the company's decision to stop operating the mill in Grand Falls-Windsor. "For a hundred years, Abitibi and its predecessors enjoyed the privilege of Newfoundland and Labrador's natural resources," Williams said. "It simply makes sense if Abitibi are not going to continue the operation of the pulp and paper mill and renege on their commitment to our province, they will no longer have access to our natural resources. Danny Williams for Prime Minister
Moonbox
Danny Williams is a worm with a big mouth. I'd love to see what NAFTA has to say about his big balls too... While I don't necessary disagree with what he's trying, I doubt he'll get away with it.
fellowtraveller
Danny Williams, again, plays to the choir in Nfld. He borders on buffoonery much of the time.

Danny Williams for Prime Minister he is right in that regard. his gov't was subsidizing Abitibi Bowater, if they want to shut down the mill, then he can take away their subsidies. The lord giveth, the lord taketh. It's not like the company is losing money with this though. The company did not own, the water, and the trees. That's crown leases, plain and simple. I can't see Williams losing in this case. Abitibi wanted to have their cake and to eat it too. Edited December 17, 2008 by blueblood

eyeball
Careful what you wish for. Recall the CIA installed a bloodthirsty dictator in Iran in response to pretty much exactly what Danny Williams just did. The world's been completely FUBAR ever since. applejack
Dictatorship in Alberta ....... hmmm . Seems to me that the conservatives have done whatever they choose to do !
eyeball
Alberta's Conservative's similarity to the Shah is probably more comparable to the way the Shah opened Iran's legs to just about any old super-power who'd line up to rape her. I guess we'll see just what kind of balls Alberta has when the US tells it to go peddle its filthy oil somewhere else. That reminds me, it wasn't that long ago that Alberta was being encouraged to clean up its image for China so they'd feel more comfortable doing business there. I suppose that meant doing business in lieu of any environmental concern but I bet if Alberta proposed to bring back the death penalty or something they might even get the US to jump on board again. eyeball
Alberta is struggling to improve its image in China. Beijing wants a relationship of trust with its oil suppliers – and that means it usually prefers to buy from authoritarian regimes in Africa, Latin America or the former Soviet Union, where there are no complications about democracy or minority rights. Or environmental concerns I might add. If you've seen one super-power you've seen them all. Edited December 20, 2008 by eyeball
Toro
The Banana Republic of Newfoundland. Hugo Chavez ain't got nothin' on Newfoundland and Labrador premier, Danny Williams. Ol' Hugh at least pays compensation for expropriating private assets owned by corporations, unlike Williams, who is just taking the assets of forestry company AbitibiBowater. Scratch Newfoundland off the list of places to invest.

This would apply if a "Danny Williams" initiative took place in Alberta. Newfoundland doesn't have alot of pull in the Oil market and that is the only resource that could lead to foreign shennanigans. Well, oil and bananas and considering some of the posters here, Perhaps Danny qualifies as bananas
Argus
What does the word Lease mean to you? He's not merely cancelling a lease. He is confiscating company assets, including three small electric plants. But it's all hot air meant to make him look like the grand defender of the public. The courts are not going to accept expropriation of private property without compensation no matter how much "Blowhard Danny" whines.
