I'd like to see a western separatist movement. Saskatchewan, BC, Alberta. What a wealthy country!

Quebec and Ontario can rot and stew in their own juices and find someone else's cash to prop up their obsolete manufacturing economies.

This coalition SHOULD be the last straw. The reason these 3 jackasses from the "Bloc Torontois" think they can lay their grubby hands on power and do whatever they please with it and our money is because they always have. If the west had a serious separation movement, we would hold WAY more clout than quebec. Quebec is a joke. They have the most unsuccessful separation movement in the history of the qworld, which ba sically implies it's a farce - it's not real. It's a hijack. ANd now Jack Layton and the Liberals are party to it.

The liberals have been shrivelled to a party hiding out in a barricaded hovel called "Toronto" witha leader who just resigned a month and a half ago and somehow they've still found a way to get their grubby hands on power, make the resigned leader into a "Primeminister" and hand the country over to quebec and the socialists - yet again.

i hate the liberals with a passion, and would be 100% for any form of western separtist party, or if push came to shove, a civil war i would back if thats what it took to separate from the east

I have also stated to some that I would leave the country... but I have tried that before it wasn't easy. For one thing, immigration elsewhere takes years and years and usually you are stuck with the worse jobs in the meantime - despite education and skills.

I too, Jerry, am becoming furious with the way this country is going.

Sometimes I wish I still lived in Indonesia where I didn't give a shit about the politics or even the country for that matter... I could always just up and leave if I felt like it - which I finally did. Here I have to deal with politicians that are just as dumb as their Indonesian counter-parts, yet I have a lot more to lose and can't just up and leave as easily here.

Perhaps if government was less partisan - eg. no parties allowed people with the skills and all walks of life could be in cabinet. Also the three major parties federally represent parties got votes from most ridings.

One of the sad elements of the system as it is now is that it doesn't give second place and third place ect.. finishers in the local ridings representation. Personally I think all votes should count.

Even federally though, the conservatives do not have a majority by seats or popular vote. I think Canada would be better off if Cabinet wasn't actually MP's.

Talk of separation is pretty silly.

Among my family and friends, I have heard lots of people talk about separation in a flippant way, but never in a serious way. I think the famous "Republic of Alberta" bumper-stickers represent a hearty "up yours" to old-line Ottawa politics, not an actual intent to separate. For the most part.

Among my family and friends, I've never heard serious separatist sentiment, but what I did used to hear all the time is utter contempt and cynicism with regard to federal politics in Canada. The belief that the Liberals care about little outside of the Windsor-Montreal corridor... the belief that the Progressive Conservatives stabbed us in the back... the belief that our paltry handful of MPs just doesn't matter in Ottawa anyway, that we could send Liberal, send PC, or send the Moose Party, it's all the same: a token representation with no impact at all... the belief that the Liberals could legalize kindergarten prostitution rings and Ontario voters would still put them in power.

Harper's victory in 2006 challenged all of this cynicism. For almost 3 years, the system delivered a result that made people think "wow, this thing ... actually works?"

This coalition, though, it will reignite all of the cynicism with an intensity that exceeds the darkest days of the Gomery Inquiry. It can't do anything but make people decide that federal politics in this country is more broken than they ever imagined.

Kimmy, that may well be true. And the lack of strong support for the topic is bolstered by the massive influx of easterners into the province - with roots elsewhere.

But let's talk seriously about it for a moment.

Aside from outdated nationalist sentiments, can you think of what Alberta gets out of confederation?

Or put another way: look at the benefits of secession. The pure wealth. The self-determination. The lack of millions being funnelled to Ottawa each month. Not being told what to do by someone else.

There are a lot of benefits to secession - logically speaking. Not too many benefits to confederation, logically speaking, for Albertans or Western Canadians.

Even better would be a Canada without Quebec. Think of the peace, the prosperity, the self control our country would have in the absense of Quebec.

What planet do you live on? I live in Ontario and even I know enough history to know that western separatist sentiment has been around for generations, in significant numbers. Ever hear of the Crow rate?

I can't for the life of me understand why Albertans stuck around this long! If I weren't too poor, old and fat I might emigrate there myself. I find myself trapped right in the middle of madness, with no hope of escape.

Canada is better without Quebec because Quebec is a distinct society! They have said as much themselves.

But more to the point, given the constant, endless ongoing consitutional wrangling, ransoms by the Bloc, billions in unrecoverable transfer payments, threats to separate from the dominion, refusal to adopt and sign the constitution, heartwrenching referenda, speak a different language, have different beliefs and culture, the more pertinent question is:

How is Canada better with Quebec?
