there will be a "deal"

nothing official. rather the Liberals and the NDP will agree to work togethor. The liberals would go to the NDP with their budgets, for example, and say "what do we need to give you if you will support this?"

but

the Liberals would probably take the issues the NDP says no to, to the Bloc or the Tories.

1980 occurred because Clark can't count and Bob Rae led a group of New Democrats against his budget.

In 1980, MacEachan realized that Clark had no contacts with the Creditistes and MacEachan also knew that he could get Trudeau to come back. Clark's government fell because the six Creditistes sat out the vote. (All six lost their seats in the 1980 election.) BTW, I suspect Clark felt he could pull a Diefenbaker and turn a minority into a majority.

Why is this relevant? Because no formal coalition is necessary. Just careful discussions, and the basic fact that politicians fear elections. The Liberals have traditionally been good at managing such.

August1991.......d'accord. Tu as raison. ;)

And thanks for the accurate history lesson.

Trudeau in the Globe: Setback in '79

'In Ottawa, Mr. Trudeau promised to remain as Leader of the Liberal Party and Leader of the Opposition, and he urged Liberals not to feel downcast about the result.

"Most important, be of good cheer and don't be sad because the Liberal Party has fought a great fight and will fight many great fights in the future," Mr. Trudeau said.

"I will be a pretty good Leader of the Opposition," Mr. Trudeau said to deafening applause from his supporters. A clause in the Liberal Party constitution requires a leadership review to be held at the party's next convention.'

Does anyone know who was the NDP leader at that time and how many seats they received in the 1979 election? B)
