DogOnPorch Posted March 3, 2009 Author Report Posted March 3, 2009 I am no expert on Aircraft but I can comment on what I have read and limited experience on flying. The Mosquito I think was amazing along with hurricanes and Spits. The hurricane never got it`s recognition because the spit was so cool. The hurricane could take more abuse because of it`s fabric body. A patch and some glue and away it went back into action. For commercial aircraft I agree that the Super Connie was brilliant looking and I had the pleasure in flying on one belonging to KLM. Great service and comfort. The worst aircraft I flew in was a RCAF North Star. Left Calgary and landed in Germany five days later. Scarey ,noisy and rough. I agree re: the Hurricane. Spits tended to be vectored towards the 109s while the Hurris went for the bombers. Served the entire war which says a lot for a plane from the 1930s. -------------------------------------- It's a Daisy. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

Alta4ever Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 I have always loved the f-14 for some reason to me me it just seemed ooze power. The most interesting wwII airframe I have ever seen a picture of is the Horton 229 Quote "What about the legitimacy of the democratic process, yeah, what about it?" The most interesting wwII airframe I have ever seen a picture of is the Horton 229 The B-2 owes its existance to the Ho-229. Ho-229 in action... They made the B-49/B-35 back in the 1950s...also based on the Ho-229. Here's a rebuild of an old GeeBee racer... Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
bush_cheney2004 Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 The B-2 owes its existance to the Ho-229. Not entirely true, as Northrup had a concurrent pre-war flying wing program. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Northrop..._Udvar-Hazy.jpg According to Wiki, Germany's Hugo Junkers also advanced the concept earlier in the century. DogOnPorch Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 I know! Some crazy designs out of the 3rd Reich. The Natter was another wild ride, apparently. bush_cheney2004 Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 (edited) I know! Some crazy designs out of the 3rd Reich. I wonder how the Deutsches Museum in Munich handles this delicate matter...so many excellent designs with swastika insignia. American museums eat that stuff up....including a complete U-boat: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...da/U505wide.jpg I was in San Diego last December at a small aviation museum that had all kinds of Nazi hardware down to turbine engine cutaways and complete "avionics". The Allies must have stripped the place bare back in 1945. Edited March 27, 2009 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
DogOnPorch Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 Dang, that's a nice looking U-Boat. One of my various relatives died aboard one (U-1062). A Milk Cow U-Boat. Have you ever toured the Bowfin @ Pearl Harbor? Torpedoed a ferry dock if I recall. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

DogOnPorch Posted March 29, 2009 Author Report Posted March 29, 2009 (edited) A few old MiG vids... A flight in a rebuilt MiG-15 A similar one of the MiG-17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb9mrTZqZXI Although similar in looks...these were two completely different aircraft. The main difference being the shape of the wings, addition of an afterburner and removal of the 37mm cannon found on the 15. The 15 of course saw action high over Korea while the 17 is famous from Viet-Nam, the Arab -Israeli Wars and the India-Pakistan conflicts. A Czech group restored an example of the next in line. The MiG-19 'Farmer'. Czech music not mine...lol. Edited March 29, 2009 by DogOnPorch Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Wilber Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 Spitfire ME 109 Beat-up Awesome video. The 109 is powered by an original DB engine unlike most you see which are ex Spanish Air Force models re engined with Merlin's. Crank up the volume. DogOnPorch Posted April 17, 2009 Author Report Posted April 17, 2009 (edited) Great video. Looks like a 109F or 109G. It has its tropical airfilter attached, as well. The Spit appears to be a MkV (or perhaps a MkIX...paint job appears grey/green rather than BoB era green/brown. Edited April 17, 2009 by DogOnPorch Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Wilber Posted April 17, 2009 Report Posted April 17, 2009 The Spit is a MKIX or later. MKV's had a single radiator and three blade prop. Looks like a IX though. The Me is a 109G-10 Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC

The Me is a 109G-10 Ah cool. The G-10 was a pretty mean machine. Here's some more cool Kai Tak (the old Hong Kong airport) stuff...I might have posted some earlier...dunno. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PCOcyt7BPI For those unaware, Kai Tak required a steep turning decent approach right over the city...then lowwwww down...almost touching buildings it seemed...for a short final on the single short runway built out over the bay. Cross winds were almost constant...just to make it more fun. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Sir Bandelot Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 As a kid I used to love to watch the Air Show in Toronto. We would sit on a hill near High Park where we had a good view of the water. One time a large delta-wing bomber called "The Vulcan" flew right over our heads. I'll never forget the sound it made- a terrifying roar! Quote
