M.Dancer Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Thats my point. A KEG steak at 20-30 bucks is nothing I want. Bad meat (well not bad is in tainted) and at half the price too expensive. At least Hy's, from what I recall many many years ago , was tasty at $40+. I never go for steak anymore, at least not a restaurant steak. I can do infinitely better at home. Restaurants are for exploring the unknown or different. Stuff like tuna, shark (including soup) foie gras, sweetbreads , offal.....that sort of stuff. Oh, and for trying Haggis. But I like to be mildly drunk first. The Keg has been reinventing itself....it's losing it's office party/University history and tring to become a place for young professional to meet and eat...we have business lunches there from time to time because the York location is close to clients, the kitchen is speedy and the tab won't bankrupt the company. For myself though, I like Seniors on Yonge. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
M.Dancer Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 As for Dobbin's OP, no argument there. As for my steaks, I butcher my own steers that way I know that my steaks are perfection. If I want lean steaks, they go on grass feed, if I want tender, they go on oats/barley. Also the benefit of butchering yourself is you get to make em as big and as lean as you want them.As for cooking, the barbeque will suffice, so will a spruce log campfire. There is a restaurant around the corner from me that sells kobe beef hot dogs....$8.00 each or $12.00 a pound to take home and cook yourself...no need to explain that....or for that matter the $40.00 dollar black angus burger at the Bymarket grill.... I don't know why my mentioning the oxymoron of Winnipeg and sexy brings out the insults from you. Are you defensive about Winnipeg? I mean with the -45 winters and the breathing apparatus's needed for the hordes of mosquitoes when it is not -45, where is the sexy? lol Please, let's have a civilized discussion and leave the personal insults out of it. guyser Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 . And if needed I'll explain why Angus beef is better than the rest. Please do explain. Quote
blueblood Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 Please do explain. When the feeders (cattle on grain feed) are ready to be processed, they go on grain feed in feedlots where they are packed like sardines in order to fatten up. Angus cattle have a specific genetic trait concerning this. Their fat "marbles" in their carcasses on the rack. In other words their meat sort of has a marbled texture. Now it is the fat that gives the steaks their tenderness and great taste. Angus, as far as the meat industry goes due to its marbled fat texture is the tastiest and tenderest. Forty bucks for an angus burgers??!! I'm unloading angus feeders for 650 bucks a pop, and a burger is forty bucks. I knew Ontario was expensive but that's ridiculous. The beef still goes through the meat grinder. Angus is better, not forty dollar burger better. At Montana's and Earl's the Angus Beef doesn't get that kind of premium. I happen to think that the Angus angle is getting diluted. Blueblood, any thoughts about that? Is there a way to sell it as Angus but it really isnt? I mean along the lines of Organic, now anyone can put that on it, even though it is to be "certified" . Certified my arse. MD, Spend the money ya cheap Limey :0 Only get one chance in life. No sense saving for your daughters wedding. All I can say is I hope it is better than the Buffalo Burger I had at a high end restaurant last year.It was $20 or so , and it tasted like nothing. It was dry and void of taste, just like my women. I called the waiter over, whom I knew by the way, and said.." Are f***ing kidding me with this?" Wound up with pasta. Quote

No....I never buy single malt at a bar...that is something enjoyed at home...when a bottle of the macallum can cost $200 and a shot can cost $25.... My wife went to the Jolly Miller 2 weeks ago. She used to dring there underage way back when...luckily there were no recruiters at the scene then....she said it was good but she doesn't eat fish...so she went steak. You want to feel old? blueblood Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I forgot to ask. What do you think of the new beef slaughterhouse proposal for Winnipeg? Will that help some of the cattle farmers around you? I think that's great, it will help out in the long term as they are killing like crazy now to avoid feeding. It's also great for providing some jobs in Winnipeg. I hope it stays in business, it's also good due to the failing of Rancher's Choice. Anything that helps get the bloated cattle population down is a good thing. The fact that city people are paying an arm and a leg for meat when there is a flooded cattle market is ridiculous. As for Angus meat, it's getting diluted and seems to be a fad. The way to tell at a restaurant is to order an angus steak and a regular steak of the same cut. Angus should have more fat, and it's got the "marbled texture", should be more tender and tasty. I wouldn't be surprised if stores bs'd a person about that, you'd have to be a conniseur or a butcher to tell the difference. As for the buffalo burger, it's not going to be tasty. Buffalo's don't go to the feedlot and are almost all grass fed. Buffalo is going to be more lean "healthy" burger. As for telling an Angus burger from a regular cow burger, there's no way in telling from where I'm standing, it all goes through the meat grinder and ground beef looks like ground beef. I'd say it depends on the chef cooking the damn thing, burgers can be good or they can be crappy depending how good the chef is.
