Harper Tories refuse to discuss

Does Stephen Harper's Conservative government have a hidden nuclear agenda?

Not if you happen to live outside Canada. The Canadian government has been campaigning internationally for months to add this country to the small, tightly circumscribed club of nuclear enrichment states.

But the diplomatic arm-twisting only came to light less than three weeks ago, when the United States announced it was dropping its insistence on a ban on uranium enrichment technology to non-nuclear states.

Anonymous negotiators at the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group meeting in Vienna emerged to say the American demand had been shelved primarily at the insistence of Canada, which wants to build uranium enrichment plants.

Who knew?

As it turns out, a great many people - but few in Canada and certainly not the news media whose job is to inform the public about federal policy.

Okay for Canada to enrich but not for Iran?

And why the big secret?

Foreign Affairs said it might be able to arrange a background briefing with officials. But almost two weeks later, the request remains stalled somewhere in the Prime Minister's Office or its bureaucratic arm, the Privy Council Office.[/quote

Someone should ask the reporter if his job is to mislead the public with unfactual headlines. Did the Harper Tories refuse to discuss? No.

What is this then....

In the wake of the Vienna meeting, requests by The Canadian Press for interviews with Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn or Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier were summarily rejected

So what.

Since when is any Minister, inclduing the Prime Minister, required to sit and and bark when demanded by some media hack?

Many, many news stories include some idiotic reference like: "The Big Kahuna had not returned numerous messages at press time."

All Tory spokesmen and ministers refuse to comment on the subject. Is that misleading?

Of course when you run on the open and transparent ticket and are closed and opaque.....

I guess we could ask our allies what our strategy is. They seem to know.

Whatever it is, it means a breech of the non-proliferation arrangement and Iran, which is pressing its case, can point to Canada as getting special treatment.

Like I said....no one should pretend to be stupid for the sake of partisan hackery

I wonder if the Tories will take the same stance in Question Period.

It will be interesting to note why they want Canada exempted from the arrangement on non-proliferation so that the country can enrich uranium.

It will also be interesting to note if they express any concern that Iran will use that exemption to successfully push their case as well.

Never .

Stifling media access, shortcutting debate, dismissing all criticisms, and stonewalling investigations are prime characteristics of authoritarianism and Fascism.

Harper's antics are very much like those of Bush.

Stephen Harper : Bush-Bot.
