Except those who merely are looking for a Canadian passport to provide an escape route when their poor excuse for a nation implodes. Then it's off to the Great White North for a little R&R until things are hunky-dorry in the 'old country'. Thanks...suckers.

I would be curious as to the numbers that do this. I doubt very many.

Or those who didn't qualify for the US for whatever reason, then choosing Canada as a 2nd choice. First chance they get...California here we come. Thanks...suckers.

That has always been the case. Sometimes we dont let them in and they go the their second or third choice.

Don't tell me it doesn't happen...en masse at times.

En masse? er......not that I can recall.

I also believe there are reasons certain countries are literally crap-holes...and it isn't just random luck-of-the-draw. They did it to themselves and we're fools to think that they won't behave exactly the same way here. We allow those cultures into Canada at our peril. Example: a fellow comes to our door with an architecture degree from his home country...overlooking the fact that buildings fall over there on a regular basis. Now he wants his degree recognized and employment in his field. Shall we let him? He'll make a big fuss if we 'force' him to drive a cab or anything else he feels is beneath him. Doctors are an obvious problem here. Standards aren't universal...no matter how PC you want to get about it, certain countries produce better doctors. Who do you want a-cuttin'...a doctor trained in a 3rd World university...or one schooled here in Canada or the US?

Seriously...it's your heart...can you afford to be politically correct? If you can you must truely believe in an afterlife...good on you.

Well , those crap holes are that way for many reasons, the least being the people that want to immigrate. They realize it is a crap hole and want a better life. Good for them

But your examples have flaws. An architect is not the reason buildings fall down. It is the contractor cutting corners. The architect has plans registered and easily checked, the contractor on the other hand has the building, but you cannot see into said bldg to see what he cut corners on. The worst disaster in Korea (Sampong Bldg IIRC) was attributed to the contractor changing plans. The Kansas City collapse, same thing.

Those Drs you mention could very well have been educated here or the US or any other 1st world country but because they have a third world address you want to discount them all. Seeing how easy it would be to test them we should open our doors to them. But the College doesnt want to step on any toes. Powerful lobby they have.

Lebanon's latest melt-down. Tens of thousands of "Canadians" apparently found the 3rd World crap-hole of Lebanon a better place than Canada right up until the Israelis showed up. That's pretty en-masse.

So random luck-of-the-draw. We were very lucky with that draw re: Canada. Bangla Desh...just America that roled 'snake-eyes'. Here I thought it was hard work that built Canada rather than Wheel of Fortune. Who'd a thunk it? But, I understand the need to be PC least people think you're (horrors) against the great concept of multi-culturalism. You could be branded a bigot or a racist for simply speaking one's opinion. The sky is green...the sky is green...the sky is green...hey I'm starting to believe it, too! The sky is green...the sky is green.

I work in contruction amounst other things...'East Indian Construction' isn't a compliment. That's the practice of using one stud instead of two...two nails instead of three...etc, etc, etc. The name wasn't randomly assigned out of the blue...errrr....green.

And yet Mulroney signed it into law.

Mulroney a Quebec PM did what any moralistic PM would do for residents of French Quebec.

Signing multicuturalism into law, combined with Trudeau's Charter is simply topping the cake with icing allowing and completing the linguistic jig saw puzzle.

Isn't rule by minorities what every Canadian wants and desires?

Yep, 1988 was a very bad year.

Canada is a model for the rest of the world in terms of multiculturalism and tolerance. I have Jews, Arabs, Blacks, Whites, Asians and Aboriginals all living within two blocks of me. The ESL school down the street is full of Muslims who shop at the deli at the corner that proudly flies the Israeli flag.

Where else but Canada?

They were all immigrants , or were some of them citizens of this country. That said, yes in many ways that was a debacle and wont be repeated.

I am unsure of your point here.

Is it your contention that people who live in lousy countries should be labeled lousy too?

Indeed...wouldn't count on it not being repeated. We'd do it all over again in a flash. Afterall...Canadians help.

In Canada, it's to one's advantage to appear to support 'multiculturalism' even if one doesn't agree with it.

Is it your contention that people who live in lousy countries should be labeled lousy too?

Pretty much...I don't believe countries get to certain states without 'the people' getting involved. No 'Wheel of Fortune' for me.

So you agree with me. Why didnt you just say that.

We agree if you agree that 3rd world diplomas are worth about as much as the paper they are written on. Industries exist in countries to forge such things (diplomas, passports, etc) for the express purpose of getting into countries like Canada. Better safe than sorry...right?

So did the PLO in the form of Yasser Arafat. I'm not sure nobel prizes are an accurate barometer for anything in terms of what's acceptable for Canada and Canadians. No worries, though. We usually agree.

lol...I know that...and Shaw's statement stands. Plus, if we're to use Nobel prizes in a who's best pissing match, I believe Canada outnumbers all of South America's countries put together re: prizes won.

Probably because we send more people to university, affluence and wealth can do that....but it doesn't mean that those studying physics in brazil or india are getting a 3rd world education.

I'll bow to your logic with the qualifier that forged diplomas, passports and other documents are still a huge problem. So what do you think? Let the architect build, then? Let the surgeon cut?

Because we allow dual citizenship. Again, nothing to do with multiculturalism. To be honest, I am not a big fan of multiculturalism myself but most of the examples being brought up here have nothing to do with it.

Reality and history.

If I am Canadian citizen born and bred, and move to another country, how would you top me from becoming Irish?

back wen my father was a lad, almost every immigrant Canadian was a dual citizen...citizen of canada by choie and a citizen of britain by birth.

Not that your comment is apropos to anything anyway...Canadians are free, including Chinese canadians to protest about what ever they want.....

That's true. Canadians are free to feel loyalty to a foreign communist governments as they choose.

And I'm free to say they're not really Canadians, and we should stop letting them into the country.

Multiculturalism is not a failure. If you are present in Canadian society today, you will realize that there is no problem here. Even with multiculturalism as policy, immigrants or their descendants eventually integrate into mainstream society and culture, 10 times out of 10.

Based on a total lack of evidence, but what they hey, it's still your opinion, and if you choose to state it as a fact, well, hey, what can that hurt.

In actuality we have no idea if Muslim immigrants will integrate or not. In other countries they have not. There is no real evidence to suggest they will integrate any better here. What we will be left with is a permanent and growing sub-group which spurns almost all our cultural assumptions and beliefs and feels loyalty to the Muslim world - much of which is hostile towards the West.

Uh yeah, but they don't recognize why it was a crap hole. I would suggest that if you take all the Lebanese who have immigrated to Canada to get away from the mess in Lebanon, and resettled them in some fictitious empty part of Canada together, without us there, they'd behave exactly as their compatriotes back home are. The same goes for any other ethnic groups. If you resettled all the Somalians in an empty city, with the power to run everything as they choose, do you honestly think they'd have a democracy which freely respected human rights, etc? I think they'd have some kind of an Islamic dictatorship inside a year with Islamic laws for all.

These people came here to get away from poverty, not their culture or religion. They want to bring those with them, and multiculturalism encourages them to do so.
