There is no danger for anyone from culture X going into culture Y's territory. The dreks of society are filled with CDN born , the welfare payrolls are filled with our homegrown folks moreso than our recent arrivals. We have a quarter of a million folks coming in to this country who for the most part are doing ok, regardless of the fact they may not be doing as well as earlier arrivals or as well as CDN born people. 24 pages and I can accurately say not a goddamn person has even come close to associating multiculturalism is a failure let alone a laughable upgrade to huge. I'm entirely in favour of newcomers integrating themselves into the Canadian mainstream. I'm most definitely opposed to the idea of a 'community of communities'. I always have been. I thought it was a stupid idea created by pie in the sky, ivory tower academics forty years ago and nothing has happened to change my mind. Given we insist on living in such a globalized one world market we really should evolve with the times and start regarding ourselves as Earthlings integrated into a human mainstream. Multiculturalism is really just a stepping stone but our trailing foot is still stuck in the same primordial muck that our hind-brains are. The sort of fear you subscribe to and promote leaves me with the sense that you'd be absolutely terrified of taking the next step and assimilating our multinational world into one integrated planetary community. I mean, if globalization isn't a step towards that end then what is it exactly, a pie in the sky scheme created by ivory tower economists or CEO's? Apparently you don't understand the difference between discussing multiculturalism and discussing immigration. But that's okay, I understand those on the Left never pause to give any thought to such things. Yes, Brian Mulroney, that great icon on the Left, tripled immigration back in the eighties, as I posted on the immigration thread, in order to solidify the PC party's ties with immigrant and ethnic groups. Since then, the idea of not doing as Mulroney did has become a thought to raise horror and hackles among all Lefties everywhere. It's become a sort of touchstone of what they believe in. Immigration, and the more the better - to help the Tory party get elected. So why not bring in a million a year? Why not two million? It's not like this country is worth anything or we should have any sort of care or concern over its culture and values. The percentage of foreign born in cities like Toronto and Vancouver has risen from 5% to 55% in a generation. No reason it can't go to 90%. What the hell, eh? Only a 'xenophobe' would oppose that! Ah yes, the typical old guy perspective. No, I don't like the "value rise" in the housing market. It makes it basically impossible to buy a decent house in a decent neighborhood somewhere like Vancouver. A decent home in a decent neighborhood runs like $1.5 million. To save up a 20% down payment is 300k, and the monthly payment on your 25 year mortgage at 4% will be $8000. Totally absurd and out of reach out of anyone but the top ~1% of earners. Quote
