Keepitsimple Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Here's an article (my bold) from The Star this morning that had me scratching my head........he's learned to manage Ontario's economy from Republican governors? Good for him - but I'm sure Howard Dean won't be too happy in the run-up to the Presidential election. In an interview with the Star to outline his demands for Tuesday's federal budget, McGuinty said Prime Minister Stephen Harper's neo-conservative beliefs are undermining Canada. As well, the premier yesterday urged Harper to reconsider his long-standing resistance to subsidizing business with public money. "He's been very clear. It's an ideological aversion. He believes that when it comes to economic growth, the best government is the least government," said McGuinty. "That is outdated and it's not in keeping with the approach by Republican governors, who have taught me these lessons," he said, referring to U.S. lawmakers who invested taxpayer money in business despite their right-wing politics. I think what he's trying to say is that many left-wingers and right-wingers both agree that the government should invest in businesses... Quote Almost three thousand people died needlessly and tragically at the World Trade Center on September 11; ten thousand Africans die needlessly and tragically every single day-and have died every single day since September 11-of AIDS, TB, and malaria. We need to keep September 11 in perspective, especially because the ten thousand daily deaths are preventable. - Jeffrey Sachs (from his book "The End of Poverty")
M.Dancer Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I think what he's trying to say is that many left-wingers and right-wingers both agree that the government should invest in businesses... I don't think that opinion is widely shared across the board. I think gov't should invest in infrastructure and let venture capital invest in businesses. Oleg Bach Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I don't think that opinion is widely shared across the board. I think gov't should invest in infrastructure and let venture capital invest in businesses. It's true that Harpers attitude and approach is old fashioned...what do you expect when his puppet masters are powerful old lawyers approaching seventy years old on the average - the attitude and mentality of Harpers backers is harsh and based in the late 50s' - So once Mr. Harpers handlers die off naturally in time- things will improve - Harper really likes the office and enjoys sitting at the controls of a military vehicle - he's just a big kid and will be spit out in time. In the mean time he is having a great adventure - at our expense. Quote
gc1765 Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 I don't think that opinion is widely shared across the board. I think gov't should invest in infrastructure and let venture capital invest in businesses. I agree. However, I think the government investing in businesses is a policy usually associated with the "left", and McGuinty is trying to show that many "right-wingers" also agree with this policy. I think what McGuinty is trying to say is much different than what the OP seems to be implying... geoffrey Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 It's true that Harpers attitude and approach is old fashioned...what do you expect when his puppet masters are powerful old lawyers approaching seventy years old on the average - the attitude and mentality of Harpers backers is harsh and based in the late 50s' - Evidence of this? Harper's economic views are far more modern than direct investment in dying industry. McGuinty's economics and proposals to help manufacturing are why manufacturing is where it's at today. I agree. However, I think the government investing in businesses is a policy usually associated with the "left", and McGuinty is trying to show that many "right-wingers" also agree with this policy. I think what McGuinty is trying to say is much different than what the OP seems to be implying... I think your right gc. None the less, McGuinty needs to be a little more careful in what he says... though than again it's McGuinty. How did Ontarians re-elect this guy?
