ScottSA Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 VENEZUELA Please, wouldn't you love to have Chavez run things here? I don't spose you know he's holding a plebescite tonight to see whether he can be more or less a dictator? So much for your beloved democracy and "Statute of Westminister." Hell, I'd rather be "enslaved" by the queen than by some two bit banana republic strongman, wouldn't you? Quote
Pliny Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 I have my bags packed and am ready to go. How much is a Hummer there? I don't like the Prius and sounds like it won't be necessary to get one at 4 cents a liter. Yahoo! Quote I want to be in the class that ensures the classless society remains classless.

"A group of business leaders are playing mean, playing dirty ... of course trying to create the sensation of product shortage during the elections." Link Quote
capricorn Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 Looks like Chavez came up short on the referendum vote...51% against. He should have called Putin for tips. But he never gives up. Given Chavez'z rhetoric heads will roll. He has already threatened to confiscate the assets of his opponents had they campaigned against the referendum. myata Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 It appears that Chavez lost the referendum: Story. Sounds like an impressive victory for democracy in Venezuela. Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

Moxie Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 I suspect Chavez will organize a mass round up of all his opponents, under the guise of socialism. He'll use his usual retoric of Western Capitalistic Pigs blah blah as an excuse. There will be blood shed. Quote Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy

We'll see but so far Chavez has said democracy has spoken and the world will see the country as truly democratic. But, as we see in this country, democracy is as democracy does and so far our government isn't the most democratic in the world either by a long shot. Quote
sideshow Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 I like a lot of what Chavez has done for his countries poor, but this last stunt was just plain stupid. I'm glad they voted against it, even if by a small margin. Quote

But, as we see in this country, democracy is as democracy does and so far our government isn't the most democratic in the world either by a long shot. I find his move to shut down radio and T.V. stations that didn't support him is the Hallmark of true democracy. Chavez is no more than another in a long line of South American dictators, certainly no heroic liberator of the masses. Yeah, stuff is cheap in Venezuela compared to here. They don't make a tenth of what the average person here does either, so there goes the big price advantage. Besides, every time you walk down the street you take a chance of being shot. The last time I was there my friend offered to let me use his spare gun for the duration of my stay. It was inconceivable to him that anyone would go outside without being armed. One of our guys was shot through the chest, the cops laid something like a hundred and twenty charges against him. Multiple counts of this and that. Nice place indeed. We had to mount an actual op to get him out or he'd still be rotting down there. Quote I yam what I yam - Popeye
