VENEZUELA

Please, wouldn't you love to have Chavez run things here? I don't spose you know he's holding a plebescite tonight to see whether he can be more or less a dictator? So much for your beloved democracy and "Statute of Westminister." Hell, I'd rather be "enslaved" by the queen than by some two bit banana republic strongman, wouldn't you?

I have my bags packed and am ready to go. How much is a Hummer there? I don't like the Prius and sounds like it won't be necessary to get one at 4 cents a liter. Yahoo!

I want to be in the class that ensures the classless society remains classless.

That is why you pay a dollar more for gas; to support your dictator Queen. When can we have a plebiscite to create our own constitution and become a democracy?

You might be able to get gasoline at 4 cents a litre but you can't buy toilet paper, milk or meat:
Venezuelans have been buying large amounts of toilet paper on rumours it could be the next hard-to-find thing amid shortages of products like milk and meat that businesses attribute to price controls but the government blames on high demand and hoarding.

"We know there are sectors that are hiding toilet paper," Finance Minister Rodrigo Cabezas told state television on Friday. "A group of business leaders are playing mean, playing dirty ... of course trying to create the sensation of product shortage during the elections."

Looks like Chavez came up short on the referendum vote...51% against. He should have called Putin for tips. But he never gives up.

"Mr Chavez described the defeat as a "photo finish", and urged followers not to turn it into a point of conflict."

Given Chavez'z rhetoric heads will roll. He has already threatened to confiscate the assets of his opponents had they campaigned against the referendum. He won't stop until they call him Fuher

We get the excuse the price is set by world prices;but that is just a monopoly fixed price.

Actually OPEC is a cartel and the prices are fixed by the market, the cartel fixes the amount of oil produced.

I suspect Chavez will organize a mass round up of all his opponents, under the guise of socialism. He'll use his usual retoric of Western Capitalistic Pigs blah blah as an excuse. There will be blood shed.

We'll see but so far Chavez has said democracy has spoken and the world will see the country as truly democratic. But, as we see in this country, democracy is as democracy does and so far our government isn't the most democratic in the world either by a long shot.

I like a lot of what Chavez has done for his countries poor, but this last stunt was just plain stupid. I'm glad they voted against it, even if by a small margin.

I find his move to shut down radio and T.V. stations that didn't support him is the Hallmark of true democracy. Chavez is no more than another in a long line of South American dictators, certainly no heroic liberator of the masses.

Yeah, stuff is cheap in Venezuela compared to here. They don't make a tenth of what the average person here does either, so there goes the big price advantage. Besides, every time you walk down the street you take a chance of being shot. The last time I was there my friend offered to let me use his spare gun for the duration of my stay. It was inconceivable to him that anyone would go outside without being armed.

One of our guys was shot through the chest, the cops laid something like a hundred and twenty charges against him. Multiple counts of this and that. Nice place indeed. We had to mount an actual op to get him out or he'd still be rotting down there.
