Of course, the primary purpose of incarceration is neither. The prime purpose is to protect us from criminals.

Baloney. I provide a clean, safe place to live at market rents or less. For the most part, all I ask is that people pay their rent on time and that they respect others in the neighbourhood. Twice I have rented to pigs, my mistake in trusting or trying to help. In one case, it turned out that the identity that checked out very well for credit and references had been stolen. Re: a website, at least one service is offered in the Lower Mainland for landlords, they keep track of rent payment records for both good and bad tenants if the landlord chooses to report either. would a near complete lack of market for wood products, a vast oversupply, have anything to do with the decline?

I'd guess that every party would be encouraging people to vote for them, not just the Greens. I expect the voters in BC to consider the 'really interesting developments' will likely include fiscal mismanagement, flight of capital and a challenged economic climate, the usual hallmarks of the NDP in BC. That may not stop them from voting NDP though, they are a curious crew.

I have been to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, men are expected to cover their heads and go barefoot, it would be grossly insensitive to do otherwise. Harper does look pretty silly, though not nearly as goofy as the culturally appropriate Dion wearing that undersized Stetson in Calgary......

A Canadian citizen is deemed guilty
fellowtraveller replied to bjre's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The police don't need a warrant to search the neighbourhood, they do need a warrant to enter my home without my express permission which would not be given in these circumstances. And it takes a lot longer than 2 minutes, since the cops need probable cause to get the warrant. The reason I would not let them is that I am quite certain that there are no corpses or spare teenagers on the premises. The cops can choose to believe that or not, and act accordingly. -
Close our borders now to foreign goods and apply huge tariffs. Resurrect the McLaughlin and Maple Leaf brands. It's our only hope.

I was responding to this sweeping statement: Robbing them? Illegal guns? Legal guns? Does the utter dishonesty of distorting what others say ever bother you?
-
Well, that would eliminate anything to do with self defence in the courts. It would also jail for life anybody who accidentally shot another person.

Gun Registry about to go bye bye!
fellowtraveller replied to wulf42's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Perhaps, but Jackboots Layton rarely allows his party to vote any way except whatever 'party policy' determines on purportedly free votes. Oh-oh, the secret agenda lives! I heard the Tories are going to give every adult an automatic weapon and force children to learn how to shoot. -
I would like to respond, but the things you are talking about are so very broad in context it is pretty much impossible. Getting once more back to the topic at hand, the closure of Big Three plants is inevitable. All we can really control is our reaction to it, and I do not see pouring more billions ionto failing businesses as having much future for the autoworkers themselves. One industry towns are always at risk, and Ontario has quite a few. Move to the oil patch in Saskatchewan, or work construction in Calgary. Or give up. Or be poor. Really, it comes down to a personal choice.

Gun Registry about to go bye bye!

It will stall and perhaps die in the Senate. The surprsing thing was that 12 NDP MPs voted for it. It is not like Jack to allow anything but obedience. -
Stelmach disses Bus Drivers...
fellowtraveller replied to madmax's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Did Manitoba do 400,00 vaccinations last week? It doesn't really matter if high risks get done this week or last or next. MOst provinces including Alberta plan on getting the shot to everybody who wants one by Xmas. Assuming they get the vaccine, that is easily achievable. What has a bee up your ass is that you'll use any excuse to whine about the ideology you hate, the actual situation does not matter. Today on CBC they went across Canada speaking to people about their experience with the vaccinations. Result: everybody is unhappy with long lines. Where they had high riskers first, they were all bitching that people were jumping the queue, 7 hour waits then getting turned away....... Same in Alberta, except we had no queue jumpers- yet. -
Sorry, I thought we were talking about the making of Ford vehicles in Canada. More recently, they have both poured billions into companies that are on life support. Is that preferable to you? which brings me back to the three options that you can do about the situation: - go hungry - find other work - move. They'll probably take the tradeitional Canadian tactic though, which is to whine that the government should do something

Stelmach disses Bus Drivers...
fellowtraveller replied to madmax's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
So the reason the clinics have stopped vaccinating is because they have limited vaccine available, becuase they were organizede enough to get that many needles in that many arms in that little time?? Would you prefer there were fewer? I don't understand your anger. 400,000 vaccinations is a significant number, congrats to the clinic workers for their hard work. -
All those damned cable and tv tax commercials
fellowtraveller replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't understand your insistence on assuming your 'options' are the only choices. Canadian satekkites? US satellites? Few satellite TV providers anywhere own or operate satellites, they purchase and resell staellite time/access. Cable companies? Just open the streets to installation of wires. Simple. Take over the phone companies? why not just allow actual competition for dial tone and wireless service? Our consumer costs are nuts compared to the US or Europe, particularly for wirelss services. Mr Massive Strawman, I never implied the debate was unique to Canada. I do wonder why we pay so much more than other countries for telecom services. -
All those damned cable and tv tax commercials

A simple start would be to drop the monopoly positions of cable companies in many Canadian markets and invite competitors, including foreign competitors. Toss the phone systems into that mix too. The costs to consumers for both are ludicrous. -
Quebec a loser in stimulus sweepstakes: CP analysis

from your own link: oh, and there is no indication that the provincial govt asked for an extension in your link, it was two other groups: More of the same half truth, or more appropriately: half lies. -
Quebec a loser in stimulus sweepstakes: CP analysis
fellowtraveller replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yes, dishonest as always. Note that the OP does not cite the dollar amounts of the programs in Quebec, which are in line with the percentage of population, or that the Quebec government has stated they are content with the administration. No surprises here. -
Rape is bad, right?

ah, sorry, the thread is long. Her only recourse then is private justice, return to Iraq and saw off their pink bits with a rusty knife. If they had immunity, then so would she. -
I don't think there is much need to wonder..... it is increaqsingly a sunset industry for those manufacturers who cannot adapt to consumers needs and who cannot change the perception that their products are inferior. I also think that the future for manufacturing is that supply and demand will determine what workers are paid. Three choices: - go hungry - find other work - move. Sorry if that is harsh but that is how I see it.

Stelmach disses Bus Drivers...
fellowtraveller replied to madmax's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
??? How so? The existing clinics blew through their entire allotment of around 400,000 people vaccinated in about a week. That is not too shabby, and probably represents around 1/4 of those who will ultinately be vaccinated. I'll bet the staff are very happy to have it slow down a bit. Toady they announced kids 6 months to 5 years now, then pregnant women, then high riskers. That should take care of the 200,000 or so doses remaining, then more vaccine is supposed to arrive. At least those who were possessed by fear now are out of the way, shouldn't be much in the way of line jumping. -
Where were all the old police cars?

Why haven't the Chrysler 300 series been used as cop cars? They are big and powerful. -

Conservative Inroads With Immigrants
fellowtraveller replied to M.Dancer's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Your premise seems to be that racism and hatred and the carrying of grudges are exclusive to immigrants or their children and related to their religion, all of which are clearly false. Most white people, immigrant or not, would not want their children marrying a person of another colour or religion. Are they any different than your immigrants, other than either not being surveyed on their bigotry or being unwilling to admit it? And your paranoia is overwhelming your common sense. In my small Canadian city, there are about 1500 Afghan people, and seceral thousand Somalis. Acts of international terrroism or domestic terrorism= approximately zero. Work hard, pay taxes, obey our laws. Beyond that, we are all free to do what we please. It is why all of us, including recent arrivals, inclduing your ancestors and mine, came here for.
