Really, 'cuz I don't think so. I can watch 'Triumph of the Will' to which I neither agree nor 'feel right' about, but I can gain insight into the mechanisms of modern propaganda methodology. You know, the Big Lie. This is no different than observing modern propaganda pieces or trying to detect or decipher the political messaging in mainstream media. Now if you want to argue that The Office (US series) - which I do agree with and feel very right about - has some sort of inherent propaganda value, then clearly I have some ways to go in my personal research. But as for the stuff that is 'put out there' by the news media, I have no illusions about it all being truthful or warm and fuzzy, rah, rah, rah.

Naw, you just got shot down yet again and all you can muster is weak anecdote and baseless opinion. When you can actually prove something - you know, like "the public service is drawn largely from the area around Ottawa" - then maybe your opinion will gain some credibility. -
Why sooo ssss-serious? Relax, have some fun. You could even make a little ditty: {sung to the tune of the Beatles 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer'} See? This can be fun! Anyone else want to add a few stanzas to what I am now calling, 'Shady's Righteous Mallet?'

I have seen this movie listed on TMN. It looks good. My introduction to Rush was the mid-70's from this dog eared album of my brothers. The first exploding RUSH album. Working Man is still awesome today. I have that original vinyl tucked away in a vintage Beckers milk crate and that tune, among many of their others, on my iPod. I have most of their albums. My favourites: Working Man/In The Mood Anthem/By-Thor and the Snow Dog 2112/A Passage to Bangkok Cygnus X-1 (heck the entire A Farewell to Kings is amazing!) La Villa Strangiato Natural Science Tom Sawyer/Red Barchetta New World Man Distant Early Warning Show Don't Tell Test for Echo I saw them at the local rink during their 2112 tour with Max Webster. It was my first concert and we were at the foot of the stage. It was quite a show with Webster going through memorable renditions of Toronto Tontos and Hangover (both on the iPod today). But at one point during Rush, a flashbomb went off and I was blinded. Then a split second later one of their amps blew up and I went deaf. Then after a few moments the sound, the band, the lights, the crowd and the roaring music all faded back in at the same time. Good times!

At least it is not like that "disease" the Republicans caught a few years ago that led them seek out blow jobs and other sexual favours in men's airport washrooms and such. Puts a new spin on the phrase 'gone to their heads' now doesn't it? Maybe the corollary to your thread title could be: More Republican Buggery

The "Liberal" Media's Right-Wing Orthodoxy
Shwa replied to bloodyminded's topic in Media and Broadcasting
I think this is very important to realize: what entity is at the heart of scrubbing words like "torture" from mainstream news media? With the example of the 'The Media and the word "Torture" we have the implication of a concetrated government effort to influence the bias of media content. And that is just one word! So, since the end of the Bush Administration, do we have a sudden to even perceptable reversal of the use of the word "torture" by a Democratic government? has their been more openness on the use of the word? I am asking you since you seem to have more depth on this issue that I or most others here. If not then can we safely assume that the 'inherent bias' on this particular issue is more or less the same with regard to both Republican and Democrat media handlers. If so (and I am not saying it is so, just 'if') a common bias would indicate a centre of sorts and it would appear that, since 2004, the centre line has shifted - at least insofar as the use of the word 'torture' is concerned. So have you noticed the return of the word 'torture' as referring to US activities (or even waterboarding) in the major US news media? -

You are kidding me right? There are all kinds of anti-Islam voices being raised in public - do a little Google search. Not to mention two wars being fought against their radical insurgent element and all kinds of legal action here surrounding their clothing. That a few media executives decided to err on the side of caution with regard to cartoons does not equate to the erosion of free speech in the West. If you want to listen to bigoted noise from people whose primary news source is cartoons and bumper stickers, there is plenty abound still. -
I'm sorry but your efforts at applying your communist ideology through Marxist methodology doesn't wash. Comrade.

Really? Canada School of Public Service - Language Training Programs and Courses Language Research Development Group Not to mention all the private language courses covered by various departmental programs such as ROT. Seriously Argus, you need to get your head out of your ass. You can barely discuss aspects of your own employer and from what I remember, that is a competency they look for when grading staff for career advancement. No wonder you are stuck in a rut. -
Nice dodge-like artistry there Argus, did you take ballet as a child? You didn't answer my question and the reason why is quite obvious. BTW 98% percent of heroin addicts drank milk as children therefore drinking milk leads to heroin addiction. I am getting the sense that you would prefer everyone to be the same, like a tried and true communist would. Wolf in lambs clothing perhaps? You seem to bleet 'wolf!" more than the average...

Woman Denied Gov't Job Because of Race

I am unilingual English and have written policy documents for a couple of government departments (working for and with), in addition to the requisite letters, memos and manuals. All in excellent English. What is your claim to expertise in English? The ability to PA files? I know exactly what racism is, and the term doesn't apply here in any meaningful sense and you know it. If you disagree then I have already asked you how non-aboriginal and non-visible minorities denote a race. I did notice you conveniently skipped over that. -

But in fact, it isn't racism. You may wish it to be, but it isn't. It is discrimination, but designed to ameliorate the conditions of a disadvantaged group. Our society is full of such discriminations and it always has been. You are just finding fault with that now? Patently false. I know plenty of unilingual English people that work for Federal departments and agencies - including the military and RCMP, that live in the West. MOST "government jobs" are not bilingual required. As well, if you were unilingual and qualify for a blingual job, the Federal government has an excellent French language training program. Not sure where you get your information about Federal government jobs, but it could use an update from credible sources. -

No it isn't racist and you co-opting the word for your own special purposes doesn't make it racist either. Where your argument about racism goes off the rails - other than the obvious aspects of real racist power structures - is that "non-aboriginal" or "non-visible minority" does not denote "race." So all you are left with is more hysterical cries of wolf and a whole lot of bleeting from the puffy sheep in your pen. But least it keeps you busy enough and keeps your mind off the shearing time. -

Fair enough. Then tell me, what are the conservatives trying to conserve in Canada then? Because from where I sit, the conservatives have been pushing multiculturalism, employment equity and immigration along like everybody else for the past generation. And I believe that the current conservative members of government also adhere to public political correctness when opening their traps. I wonder why they do that? It is likely because they 'respect' the fact that should they blow off the handle like some anonymous schmuck on some internet forum they will likely get roundly booted from their party and ostracized in their community. In this sense, they are trying to conserve their power and not much else, lacking the balls to be honest about their true feelings on the matter. And the other downside of conservatism - in the sense that you believe it exists - is that it is weak since it has failed to remove all the bad things it continually bleets about. I mean, that part should at least be obvious to you. That weakness I mean. -
Interesting story from the Star: Job equity has old Tory roots A couple of cool quotes: But this one is the most telling: And, of course, the tactical: Choice for Childcare Hers is an interesting blog, plenty of links to things like bloggingtories.ca and jacksnewswatch.com (aka "Fox North - The Preview").

So now are you saying that visible minority hires in the Federal Government are " people who grew up in Nigeria or Somalia or Taiwan and just got off a plane last year?" Or are you saying that of visible minorities, 70% don't have the language skills to do the job they were hired for? That's quite the rabbit hole you have fallen into Alice.

Shwa replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well the hiring programs are clearly not racist, unless you consider your continual bleeting of the word a way of defining it. As if a people can be "racist" against themselves. In the case of the OP, I highly doubt that language has anything to do with it. -
Drivel. We only need to remember that only a short while ago you stated that "the public service is drawn largely from the area around Ottawa..." Are all visible minority employees of the Federal government foreign born? Does foreign birth exclude a Canadian education or have as good command of English as, say, a Quebecker? It was never a major issue because all parties supported it. That is, all elected representatives of the Canadian people supported it (more or less). Now if you have a stories about MPs that were not re-elected because they supported the Emplpyment Equity Act, please share. Show me the post where I "said" that.

Of the 20 Latin American countries listed here: 4 have significanlty large Amerindian populations 12 have significantly large mestizo (mixed) populations The Spaniards has less impact that their germs and those that the diseases didn't extinguished tended to marry with the Spanish. Intermarriage has other effects with regard to rights and how those rights regarded within a particular indigenous or mixed population. Island peoples suffered the most, but the Dominican Republic still has a small Carib population: -
Well you got hired and promoted so it all worked out for you. What are you complaining about?

Once one can perhaps make a case, the the thin edge of the wedge is in. Once this happens, it is a matter of degree. And once one makes a case for "a native" one also makes a similar case for visible minorities as a whole. So it doesn't matter whether a visible minority with African parentage is serving a visible minority with East Asian parentage, they are both visible minorities. Off-hand chances not required. Remember Argus, it is the "visible minorities" that are the disadvantaged group here, not particular ethnicities. Because under our laws, they are considered visible minorities. Ethnicity is not a specified a factor when considering visible minorities generally. What about all the visible minorities that are Canadian born or 1.5th generation and have language skills? It appears you are making a hasty generalization here. Anecdotal maybe, but in my experience with several levels of government across the country, by and large the language skills of visible minorities are no different than any others. That's pretty filthy, even for you Argus. LOL! Are you saying the Employment Equity Act didnt't go before Parliament - before the elected representatives of the people like other legislation? Damned back room politics! You never know, maybe one day with the way Canada is become browner by the minute. Might even have to pass legislation that forbids discrimination against gingers and freckled folks. I wouldn't go as far as saying hiring "only" white, but would say hiring "mostly" white which is what they presently do anyways, so it all works out. Maybe. But maybe they are as good as "white people" (or any other colour of people) and they go on to take advantage of internal training, organizational knowledge and staff experience and then become your boss. Or maybe they already have, who knows. I haven't "marked" anyone, but you have. And that is OK, at least you are honest about your bigotry and that counts for something (the honesty I mean). No, the legislation is there to ameliorate the disadvantaged conditions of certain groups of people. One of the prime disadvantages of such groups is running into people like, well, you. (But those with some actual power.) Bonam called it "utterly alien" - are you calling him out as a racist?
