Its part of Keynesian economics and its built into our economic and monetary system. We need a constant supply of new builders/borrowers in order to keep the system afloat. All western economics target ~2%. Its theoretically possible to build a system that would be stable with zero growth, but you would have to scrap our entire banking and monetary systems and probably nationalize them. We would also have to default on our national debt.

Nothing is EXACTLY what we should. First of all ISIL is a puny military power surrounded by much bigger fish. They are contained. But secondly its exactly that mindset that created ISIL in the first place. "Something just HAS to be done about Saddam Hussein" blurted out right wing politicians and their hapless followers. So we got hundreds of thousands of people killed and created ISIL. And the exact same thing will happen again. Interestingly enough the Kurds Canada have been training have not been giving up territory they have taken as they beat ISIL back. And they are well known to be seeking independence. So we are basically training and equipping the NEXT terrorist army, and the next civil war will be the Kurds we are training and the central Iraqi government we are backing now. And once AGAIN, dullards will be howling "We gotta do something!!!!!". Mark my words. The terrorist army we are training and equipping will be at war with the Iraqi government within 18 months.

The Origins of the conflict against the Jews of Israel
dre replied to Rue's topic in The Rest of the World
Its just a garden variety spat over land and resources, with a side of religious idiocy. It originated during the Ottoman era in the 1880's when Jewish immigration started to increase. Between then and the start of WW1 the Jewish population increased and tensions between Arabs and Jews increased along with it. The Russians thought that Jews had assassinated Alexander the 2nd, and started pogroms, most notably in Kiev. This caused a lot of Russian Jews to leave for the United States, and Palestine, and it also increased the urgency of jews to create their own state. This increased tensions even more, and stoked the fires of both Zionism and Arab Nationalism. The British at that point realized what a bunch of retarded zealots they were dealing with and moved to extricate themselves from the situation. Throw religion into the mix just to make things worse and there you have it. Conflict: Dirtfarm Holy Land. Two gangs of retarded zealots who's idiocy is an embarrassment to the human race that we will never be free of. -
I know! You can buy good food now.

Huh? That makes no sense in the context of what we were talking about. Did you accidentally quote the wrong post? -
Canada - a wholly owned province of China
dre replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The cost of manufacturing in those places is a lot higher. Wages are twice as high in Thailand as in Japan. There's a reason why see to much Chinese stuff when you walk through a large retailer... That's where those retailers get the best deals. And it would take those countries 20 years to even build the infrastructure to replace china as the biggest producer of western consumables. -
You didn't need to its a logical extension of your argument. People claim its ok for Israel to keep that land because they took it in "defensive wars" (a half truth at best). The US claimed that Afghanistan was a defensive war too, so why don't they just keep it? It could be another US state.
-
Because living in a modern affluent structured society has a moderating effect.
-
If you support acquiring territory through war, then you support the US annexing Iraq and Afghanistan, Russia annexing the Ukraine, Georgia, Khasikstan, etc. You also supported Iraq annexing Kuwait. After ww1 and ww2 we kind of all decided that was a bad way to establish international borders, but it seems like some people are rethinking that. Gonna be fun century!

They don't excuse extremism, but they helped to nurture it and and grow it. Religious conservative extremists have been trying to convince everyone over there that the west is their enemies... So when we cruise through and kill a few hundred thousand people it really helps strengthen their case and gives them a nice big rallying cry. The global war on terror is literally the best thing in history that has happened for extremists in the middle east. They tricked us into trillions of dollars of misguided spending that actually created new breed of terrorists.

If we slow immigration down how do we hit our population growth targets?
-
Not only that, but the voters have been outsmarted. We are all squabbling among ourselves over petty "left vs right" garbage instead of keeping out eyes on the real ball.
-
This is just stupid hyperbole. Western countries are at a lot more risk from their own political and business classes than they are any of the groups you mention.
-
Actually Muslims in the west are much less extreme than in the countries they came from.
-
That belief is not progressive in nature at all. Its a libertarian believe held by people all over the political spectrum, normally by people that place a high value on individual liberty. Sure as long as you don't support the killing of hundreds of thousands of muslims by predominantly Christian western armies! That would pretty much surrender any "moral high ground" you might have.
-
I'm not defending anything anything at all. And your'e the one that's unwittingly encouraging it.
-
No.. You just don't like these people so you scurry around trying find post-hoc justification for your hatred. There's really nothing more in play here than that, sorry.
-
But just like with the more extreme words in the Christian bible, almost no muslims follow those words. Like you quote about "slaughtering non muslims". 99.9% of Muslims don't slaughter anybody at all.

Canada - a wholly owned province of China
dre replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't know the exact number but its a lot. When conservative hucksters and financial elites tricked us into free trade, we started to become more and more dependent on the service sector. A lot of Canadians make a living selling imports to other Canadians. If for example we were to impose a ban on chinese products or very high tarrifs... Bye bye walmart, bye bye Canadian tire, bye bye pretty much all big box stores. -
Canada - a wholly owned province of China
dre replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well it would hurt the small number of financial elites that get most of the benefits from free trade, and a lot of the goods you buy would double in price. In the long term though it would be a good thing. -
They don't encourage it. And again that doesn't come from progressivism. Its a libertarian trait that exists both on the left and the right in people that strongly value individual liberty. The rest of your post is just disjointed nonsense.

Both communism and capitalism in their pure forms are completely unworkable. Western countries all have mixed economies with a lot of central planning and state ownership. Also the soviet example is not a very good one. First of all their system WAS able to create a world super power. And second of all its a bad example because they were under siege by most of the world, which doesn't help your economic prospects. Cuba would be a better example. It has a higher standard of life than almost all of its latin american peers. There's also dozens of countries with mostly private ownership of production that are dirt poor. I would personally never want to live in EITHER a capitalist or communist country... Thats why I live in Canada.
-
Exactly. Over that same decade the number of islamophobic bigots has also grown. Persecuted/hated groups adopt a bunker mentality so an increase in things like church attendance makes sense. Especially after a decade of idiotic cowardly fear mongering over Islamic terrorism which is 1/7th as likely to kill you as a lightening strike (1 in 20 million chance). It goes to show how poisonous to a society racism is.
